“Let my show go on,” were among the last words uttered by Buffalo Bill when he died in Denver in 1917. And it does, on Lookout Mountain, overlooking the cities Denver and Golden. Here, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Buffalo Bill live on at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave. At the Museum, you will learn about Buffalo Bill’s life, observe artifacts from his show, and experience the Old West. Buffalo Bill loved North Platte, and you will too! Buffalo Bill fell in love with the Platte River Valley when he was stationed at Fort McPherson as an army scout in the 1870’s. When he retired from the service, he founded the 4,000 acre “Scouts Rest Ranch” and brought his family out to settle north of North Platte. Cody’s love for entertaining was legendary. He designed the porches surrounding his home extra wide to accommodate his many guests and his servants regularly kept watch from the cupola of his mansion for visitors coming out from town.
When the town fathers of North Platte wanted a fabulous Fourth of July celebration in 1882, they turned to Buffalo Bill, and he didn’t disappoint them. Cody invented modern spectator rodeo with the “Old Glory Blowout” which lived up to its name, and gave Cody the inspiration for the Wild West Show which went on to tour the world.
Today Cody’s legacy lives on in North Platte in the annual NEBRASKAland DAYS celebration for two weeks in June each yea, and is anchored by four nights of the PRCA Buffalo Bill Rodeo and two nights of top-name concert performances.
Parts of Cody’s ranch, including the magnificent Victorian mansion and huge horse barn, have been preserved as a Nebraska State Historic Park. Other western heritage sites include the Lincoln County Historical Museum, Fort McPherson National Cemetery and the quirky Fort Cody Trading Post.

Franzen is also a steer wrestler on the pro rodeo level. His exuberance on a horse or after a competition is palpable. Following a particularly good day wrestling a steer at a prestigious Wyoming rodeo a couple of years back, Franzen actually skipped out of the arena waving his arms up and down as if to take flight. “I can’t control my emotions very well,” he said. “I smile too much I guess.”
Wyoming is all about smiling! One can imagine William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody smiling as he made the trek to what is now Wyoming. He is responsible for his namesake town – Cody – and opened the way westward from there so that he and friends like Teddy Roosevelt could hunt along with providing everyone a route to Yellowstone National Park from the east. Warren ICBM and Heritage Museum, Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, and the Wyoming State Museum. Cheyenne is also known for its rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days. Begun in 1897, the event has now grown into the largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration in the world. Buffalo, Wyoming, is a historic town located on the famous Bozeman Trail. It was founded in the spirit of the Old West as a merchant’s settlement and a gathering place for travelers and settlers in 1878, when Fort McKinney was established at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. Dating to the community’s early days, the Historic Occidental Hotel & Saloon still stands, although not as it was back then; a canvas tent nestled on the banks of Clear Creek. Today, the Occidental boasts a distinguished ‘Who’s Who’ guest list of the American frontier, and is internationally renowned for its Old West charm.
Notorious outlaws, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, often used Buffalo as a place of exile when running from the law. In fact, their famous photo was taken in the Occidental – and that’s what finally got them caught.
It’s no mystery why settlers chose Buffalo to stake their claim, hang their hats and start anew here. Clear Creek still runs crisp and clean through downtown. You can follow it on the Clear Creek Trail for 20-plus miles, all the way into the foothills of the breathtaking Bighorn Mountains.

OCCIDENTAL HOTEL, Buffalo, WY
Founded in 1880, the Occidental Hotel quickly became one of the most renowned hotels in Wyoming. Located near the Bozeman Trail at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains, the hotel was visited by many famous characters of the Old West as they traveled the trail. Early on, the hotel established a reputation for warm hospitality and fine food. Among those who enjoyed the hospitality of the Occidental were Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane, Tom Horn and Theodore Roosevelt. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid also visited the Occidental from their nearby “Hole-In-The-Wall” canyon hideout. Legendary frontier sheriffs Frank Canton and “Red” Angus were regulars at the hotel bar. As time passed, the Occidental was expanded until it became a grand hotel, with elegant décor and fine service. Cowboys and ranchers from throughout the region went out of their way to enjoy the amenities of the Occidental. During the depression years of the 1930’s, the splendor of the hotel began to fade, and the hotel’s owners began a long struggle to stay open. By the 1980’s, the hotel’s condition had seriously deteriorated, and was on the road to potential demolition. In 1997, Dawn and John Wexo purchased the property, and began a ten-year process of historic restoration. David and Jackie Stewart became co-managing partners in 2011. Today, the restored Occidental been restored to its former grandeur, and shines bright as a great historic hotel of the American West, welcoming business travelers and travelers from around the world. To the Lakota and other Northern Plains American Indian people, the heart of all things is found in the Black Hills of South Dakota. EXPRESS ST. JAMES HOTEL, Cimarron, NM
When you walk into the Express St. James Hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico, you feel as if you are stepping back in time, mixed with a strange sensation of something you cannot quite explain. Built by Henri Lambert between 1872 and finished by 1880, the hotel was known for its elegance and violence. In those days, the male population would gather in the bar where drinking, gambling and guns ended the lives of 26 men. After Henri and Mary Lambert passed away in the early 1900’s, the hotel footprint was altered and most of the original buildings were lost under various owners. Stories began to be told about “wild west” guests who stayed here, including William F. Cody. Scholars may disagree about his presence here at the St. James, but who knows what information the future will bring.
Robert Funk, owner of the Express UU Bar Ranch, purchased and remodeled the hotel in 2009. The historic site captures the spirit and elegance of the late 1800’s, while blending with a modernized dining area, kitchen and outdoor patio. The Henri Lambert tradition of fine food served in a relaxing atmosphere proudly continues. The carved wooden bar is still a gathering place, although the gambling and guns are now gone. The Cody Stampede Rodeo is an annual, four-day event, July 1-4, that has its roots in ranch contests and games, as well as the spectacle and drama borrowed from the world-famous Wild West shows produced by Colonel William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Top cowboys from across the continent come to Cody for the Stampede Rodeo, one of rodeo’s crown jewels and one of nine stops on the Million Dollar Gold Tour series. In addition to the Stampede performances during the Independence Day holiday, Cody also hosts the Xtreme Bulls Competition, June 30, featuring forty of the world’s top bull riders taking their shot at a $50,000 purse and the Cody/Yellowstone Xtreme Bulls title.
Many of these fine cowboys and cowgirls also spend their summers in Cody, competing in the Cody Night Rodeo and enjoying the lifestyle afforded by this great western community located near Yellowstone National Park. OLD TRAIL TOWN AND OLD WEST MUSEUM, Cody, WY
Old Trail Town in west Cody, Wyoming helps keep the Old West alive! Located along the Yellowstone Highway just east of the Cody rodeo grounds, this ccollection of buildings and artifacts is precisely where Buffalo Bill Cody and his associates surveyed the first town site of “Cody City” in 1895. The museum includes an array of historic buildings and Western artifacts that provides a hands-on history lesson. Bob Edgar, founder of Old Trail Town, gathered historic details about each structure before each structure was moved to Cody from less than 150 miles away, in most cases. The setting gives visitors a sense of actually being present when Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or Jeremiah “Liver Eating” Johnston, roamed Wyoming territory.The Mud Springs Cabin, used by Kid Curry and the Sundance Kid, was brought to Cody from a site near Montana state line, making it the second building at Old Trail Town with connections to the infamous robbers. Kid Curry and the Sundance Kid used it as a hideout before they attempted to hold up a bank in Red Lodge, Montana. The first is the cabin from Hole-In-The-Wall Country. Built in 1883, it served as a rendezvous point for Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and other outlaws in the region. Curley’s cabin from Crow Agency, Montana, is one of the most interesting structures on site. Curley was a Crow scout for General Armstrong Custer and accompanied him before the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Curly saw trouble coming and wisely left before the famous fight of June 25, 1876.
Jeremiah “Liver Eating” Johnston, made famous by Robert Redford in the movie “Jeremiah Johnson”, is also buried here. In 1974, his grave was moved from California to Old Trail Town and Redford attended the reburial ceremony.
