Good Morning Marine Corps
bldambtn — Wed, 2010-02-03 06:57
For the past year I've been working to join the Marines. I've lost 30lbs so far and have about 20 more to go. I got a call from one of my recuiter yesterday and he is comin to visit this morning. It always makes me really excited to see him. It revamps my drive I guess. We're gonna discuss my progress so far and go for a run. I'm not sure exactly what it is i'm going to do. I'm considering basic enlisting and having my m.o.s. be intelligence or military police. I'm also considering going back to college and doing the PLC course. Eventually I would like to do JAG. wish me luck :)

flboots — Mon, 2010-02-08 14:31Congrats bldambtn, As a retired military member (USN) Let me tell you to get everything that the recruiter offers you in writing. Also remember what you see on tv isnt what its like in real life. Get your education first. Graduate H.S. You can get a good college ed in the service. But remember everything in writing. Good luck and God speed.
or Army?
Concretecowboy — Sat, 2010-02-06 14:16Good for you - bldambtn...
I might suggest that you consider all the services. Remember that 'you' are a precious commodity and can expect some competition from the services for your joining. While my dad was career NAVY and served in both Korea and WWII, I chose to join the US Army for 4 years. I served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam for 68 and 69 and received the Bronze Star.
The Marines are fine (I live next o Camp Pendleton) but they are just one way to serve. The Army has a branch called 'Army Security Agency' you might consider. It is what I enlisted for and while my service went a different direction (thanks to the TET offensive of 68), my top secret cryptograph clearance opened a lot of doors. At that time we were the couriers for the embassies but probably different today. The ASA works closeley with the National Security Agency and I suspect a lot of computer stuff is there today.
A young friend of mine in the Marines reserve (has done one tour in Iraq) is looking at the JAG service but now he is back in college and scheduled for OCS. He too, needs to make the services compete for his being -all that he can be- so that he can advance. After Vietnam I was at the AFEES -Armed Forces Entrance and Examination Station- and learned a lot of the recruiting services. MAKE THEM WORK FOR YOU...
No matter, I send you a very big thank you and hope that you do well. You are an asset and good American - I think we are all proud of you.
JAG
bldambtn — Sat, 2010-02-06 20:48I too want to do JAG. I took a year to look at my options and pick what I wanted to do. I left school knowing I wanted to join the military but I wasn't sure what at first. I do love law. The summer before my senior year I spent in D.C. and helped prepare a mock trial infront of Scalia, I fell in love. Now I'm just working on losing the rest to the weight. I know I could have joined the Navy to do JAG as well, but everything I've looked at and done this past year.... The Marines make me feel giddy, like I have a crush on some one. hehe Its what I want to do and for that I'm sure. I can't start the JAG program right away I didnt finish my BAS in college so I have to go back to college but I'm on the right track.
Good Luck bldambtn. Hope

McLintock — Wed, 2010-02-03 17:54First of all, Thank you for your willingness to serve this FREE country for ours and it only people like you, who serve, who keep this country free, I'll keep you in prayers. My brother is in the Air Force, cosins and good friends in the Army. And at the time my brother went in, he ran every day for about 6 months, the last week or so before he got up to 2 miles or so. I hope and pray every thing works out. Just remember it all about RESPECT in boot camp.

Good Morning Marine Corps
Oldcowboy — Wed, 2010-02-03 09:29I for one will wish you luck. Our nation needs every young intelligent hard working person who is willing to accept the sacrafices required to protect our country.
I served in the USAF from 1967 to 1971. This included a tour of duty in Vietnam 1968-1969 at a place called DaNang . I enlisted into the Air National Guard in 1989 and retired from the Guard in 2005. I was sent to Andrews Air Force Base, Washing DC, right after 9-11 and I also was sent to Saudi Arabia.
I have known many Marines. It is no picnic. Be prepared to work yourself harder than you have ever imagined. And above all ..... WATCH YOUR 6.......you will learn what that means.

Concretecowboy — Sat, 2010-02-06 14:31Hey Oldcowboy - thank you for your service.
Were you anywhere near Ft. Bragg in 67 and 68? Or anywhere near the central highlands by An Khe in 68 and 69? I was with the 18th Airborne Corps, headquarters company at Bragg and with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam. Recieved the Bronze Star with the herd. Needless to say, we really appreciated you fly boys. Thanks...
thanks for your service

thanks for your service. Bronze Star !!! Legitimate hero !!!
You and I are of the same generation.
I enlisted in fall of 69.
for some reason God had me fight the war in Colorado. all around me were either going or coming back.
I don't know why I was spared. Some have suggested that there must be a purpose in my life but thus far I have not discovered it.
Use to have a lot of guilt about not going but I have moved past that. I volunteered twice and still did not get sent.
My thanks to all who have and are serving our great country especially in this time of trouble and multiple deployments.
