The running of the bulls comes to Arizona
ChazQueen — Thu, 2011-09-01 01:51
The running of the bulls is an ages old function which attracts countless would-be daredevils to Pamplona, Spain. But now the Phoenix suburb of Cave Creek could have its own annually bull run function. The US version of the function, however, must occur without the town's sanction. Article source: The running of the bulls comes to America
Started in the 14th century each year
The running of the bulls is a yearly function that has taken place since at least the 14th century in the town of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. It used to be a way of getting bulls to the bullring. It was the transportation to a common corral. Young men would make an effort to prove how brave they are. They would do this by running with them. The function occurs for many days. It is from July 7 to July 14 in the mornings. The herds of bullocks are released to run through the path in city. They're also released with six Spanish fighting bulls. In order to outrun the beasts, there are countless people that come from all over the world to fill the space.
Popularized by Ernest Hemingway
The event became known to the American public to a large extent because of Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises."
Just bulls for the radio
The Cave Creek event, which is scheduled for Oct. 14 to Oct. 16, will differ from its Spanish predecessor in that it will use rodeo bulls rather than the more ferocious Spanish fighting bulls. The safety doesn’t change that much. Still, it does get a bit safer.
Motive not to allow permits
Cave Creek doesn't sanction the event. The permits were taken away. Because of safety, whether it is of an animal or human, is the cause of this. The function is right for the city, according to town mayor Vincent Francia. The decision was made because the event's promoter, Phil Immordino, could not pony up the funds for sufficient insurance coverage.
About $3 million in coverage was what the city asked for. Immordino would only pay to get a $2 million insurance policy. The function will occur regardless of the permit; the town will not be liable for anything that occurs though.
