Drawing Entry

graphite. 11 x 18
Here is my latest piece which I entered in the American Plains Artist competition. It is of a an artisan I met at The Cowboy Fest in Santa Clarita, Calif. last month. I entered two other works for their consideration. They have quite an extensive prize pool, but my real motivation is the head judge is Robert Shufelt. He is the go to guy for western pencil art. And my hero. Some of my western heroes ( John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Dean Martin ) were great with a gun and a well spoken line. Mr. Shufelt uses a different tool, a pencil instead of a gun, but he is just as good with a line. A well drawn one. There are actually a few comparisons between a gun and a pencil. Both are loaded with lead. Both are drawn. Most cowboys use a 6 shooter. The most common and versatile pencil is a 6b. I could go on and on. (Thats actually all I could think of). My hope is to win some sort of monetary award, but I would be just as satified with a few words of encouragement from Shoofly. His nickname. Wish me luck.
