Condolences to the Gerson family
J. GRANT GERSON (1920 – 2012) was 92 years young at heart and still riding his horse a few weeks before his passing. Grant lived by the code of the cowboy – honesty, self-reliance, loyalty, sportsmanship and reverence. He was born in Los Angeles, and he served in the Navy. His kind heart, his generosity, and his spiritual being were always present as he lived to give to others – a true gentleman. He enriched the lives of hundreds of people through his lifelong work as the founder of Calamigos Ranch and as camp director for his children’s camp, Calamigos Star C Ranch Camp.
During his 40 years of running camp, he led by example, promoting strong morals and a positive attitude. He was involved in the American Camping Association and the Western Association of Independent Camps, even after his retirement from camp. Until his passing, Grant had remained active in Calamigos Ranch, where there are four generations who have contributed to its success, as well as an incredible group of employees, some of whom have been with him over 35 years.
He is survived by his loving wife Ruth, with whom he shared a rich and wonderful life. He is also survived by his son Glen and wife, Mon-li, grandsons Garrett and Garner Gerson, his stepchildren Susan Morris and husband, Kelly, Steve and Joanie Krohngold, Jon and Laura Krohngold, and his step grandchildren Jeremy and Mariah Krohngold, Dane and Carly Morris.
He instilled in his campers and counselors a love and respect for the outdoors that will last their lifetime. His legacy speaks volumes about his character, and it will live on in our hearts and memories. He will be remembered for embracing the joys and adventures of life and the generosity of spirit he shared with family and friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 am at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Grant Gerson’s name to:
