WINTER OF 1886-1887, ONE OF THE WORST IN WESTERN HISTORY,
BEGAN AFTER A TWO-YEAR DROUGHT WHICH HAD ALREADY KILLED
AND WEAKENED HUNDREDS OF CATTLE ON MONTANA’5 OVER5TOCKED
RANGES. THOUSANDS OF CATTLE PERISHED DURING THE BITTER WINTER,
MANY CATTLEMEN FACED TOTAL RUIN, AND AFTERWARD THE WILD, FREE
DAYS OF THE OPEN RANGE iN MONTANA HAD ENDED FOR GOOD.

HOWEVER,
C.M. RUSSELL’S PICTORIAL
REPORT OF THE DI5ASTER,
“WAITING FOR A CHINOOK”
OR “LAST OF THE 5,000”
BROUGHT THE COWBOY
ARTIST LASTING FAME AND
LED TO A CAREER WHICH
BOTH DOCUMENTED AND
GLORIFIED THE GOLDEN
YEARS OF THE COWBOY
OR ALL TIME!
