The Birth of American Cowboys

Alot of folks don't know it but before there was ever a wild west, Florida was as wild if not down right hostile to the core.
Our cracker cattle as they became known for were brought over by the Spanish in the 1500's. They eventually became wild. By the early 1800's cattemen were first cowhunters, hunting down cattle became a huge industry. They were hunted and branded then turned out in the wide open country. Cattle drives normally went to ports, such as Tampa and Ft. Myers, where cattle were sold and shipped to Cuba. Florida was built on its cattle industry, Cuba paid good money for our cattle.
In the mid 1800's a French man gave the name Cracker Cow hunter to a legend named Bone Mizell. Since then Florida cow hunters were all called crackers. We used whips here instead of ropes. Ropes were seldom used back in the cow hunting days.
Florida cattle fed many in the war for Southern Independence. Cattle were driven from all over up north to Jacksonville for shipment to our soldiers. As a result the renown grocery chain Winn Dixie was established. Today they are still known as the Beef People.

People today have little perspective on the history of the U.S. Columbus landed in the Caribbean, and subsequent Spanish Explorers landed in Florida and mainland Mexico. The majority of the Western exploration was done by the Spanish out of Mexico. It was Coronado who explored all the way into central Kansas looking for Quivira, the city of gold. Finding only dry and desolate land, he turned back to his base near what we know as Santa Fe, NM. He turned loose all cattle and horses not needed for the return, knowing they could find water easier than he could. Those herds were the source of the horse for the plains Indians. This was in 1542, 78 years before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Most of the Indians in the West got their horses by stealing them from the missions and New World Spanish farmers. I am amused by the people who fancy themselves knowledgeable equestrians who do not know that the Horse IS NOT indigenous to the Americas. Most of the herds of wild horses are the result of failed Spanish exploration.
In spite of this, since the horse inhabited the country a long time before there was a United States, wild horses should have a protected status. That's my opinion, and I'm stuck with it...........

Thanks for that post. I'm a history nut and espacially interested in the time period of the Civil War. When working in the feed lots of the SW we got many cattle out of Fl. at that time, early 60s, it was considerd the top produceing state. It even out produced Texas. Maby not for quality but it surely did for quantity. There cattle were cheep and Texas cattle were bringing premium prices. We had one feeder that bought his own trucks to haul out of Fl with. Fl. calves were going for about .15 a lb. while we were paying .35 a lb. for Texas calves. The Fl. stock had a lot of Bramha mixed in and were real tough cattle. The ones they raised here in Az. to full size beaves were ideal for this desert country. They could travel great distances to water.

Thanks for sharing that. We tend to forget that the eastcoast was the first wild west of the states afterall.
Slainte mo chara.
That's a pretty cool little tid bit of history. I've never really heard much of the cowboy history from the eastern states so it's fun to hear. Thanks for sharing it!
