Cowboy Mentality
I recently happened to come across an article written by some British fella titled "Do Americans Have a Cowboy Mentality?". The piece was not a direct reference to or a serious study of anything related to ranching, horsemanship, or even the cattle industry; it was instead some essay related to how societies accept other cultures and how individuals react when confronted with them. It struck me peculiar that such an article would use the term "cowboy" in reference to the acceptance of other points of view.
The article included remarks such as "In order to sort out what a person really means, we need to gain some perspective on what he or she might be thinking and, Americans for example, don't have that skill very well developed, probably tend to make more errors in understanding what another person means." and "values of independence do not promote the development of mental tools needed to take into account another person's point of view."
The article, at least to me, is yet another pathetic and poorly crafter attempt to explain something the author himself cannot understand. The title itself is offensive, and a crude generalization based on a complete misunderstanding of the western culture. Moreover, I believe the article intends to put down the United States as whole.
It's funny how the author talks about accepting and understanding other cultures while he fails to even look at the word "cowboy" and what it really means, where it comes from, and what's behind it. The word has been used to brand the ignorant, those quick to act in anger, and those who are intolerant of others. In reality, at least to me, the word relates to a lifestyle, an occupation and a set of values that have little, if anything, to do with arrogance or ignorance.
Arrogance and pride are not the same. The author, I believe, should stop watching western movies and come down here to see what's really going on. You want arrogance? Look no further than this new wave of know-it-all liberals and how they want to "save us all from ignorance and the darkness we live in" simply because we don't believe in legalized drugs and other absurdities. When confronted with such a person, the very second you state your opinions you're branded an ignorant. Intolerance? Sure smells like it to me.
The word "cowboy" is not a derogatory term, not an insult, it's simply a word that describes a person with a certain lifestyle. Wearing a hat is not the same as being a cowboy, it's been discussed here in length, they're just "guys with hats". Now, I want to be clear, it doesn't mean a Bostonian cannot wear a hat, but I doubt I could call myself a police officer if I went out to the surplus store and bought me a police hat.
Cowboys, farmers, and most country people that I know are one with nature. You live on its terms, learn to understand it, learn to adapt. I ain't smart enough but could somebody tell me what could be greener than that? A horse does not pollute, a windmill is what they call sustainable energy, but yet, the term "cowboy" is used to describe the opposite.
A cowboy's not going to judge you because you wear ragged clothes. A cowboy's not going to care much about what you drive or what you own. Is that intolerance? Is that ignorance?
If you stand for nothing, if you believe in nothing, if for you values change every day to match what you want to do that particular time, then sure, I suppose you can say cowboys are intolerant. Standards and values are there for a reason, they define good and bad, they draw lines you can't cross, they define who you are. If who you are changes with the seasons, then what are you? Nothing, if that's the case you're nothing, at least not in my book.
I'm sick and tired of hearing the word "cowboy" used to describe the ignorant and the arrogant. Nothing wrong with being proud of who you are, nothing wrong in appreciating the smallest things in life, nothing wrong in having values and morals and standards.
The fact the author didn't even take a couple hours to research how the cowboy came to be and the real meaning of that word means a lot to me. He doesn't care about the consequences of his actions, he's quick to brand people, quick to generalize, quick to insult. He should rethink a term to describe the arrogant and the intolerant and then apply it to himself. That'd at least be honest and most appropriate.

I agree with you, Sir. Cowboys are usually presented in a very biased and cliche way and it really sucks to be honest, because it is unfair how cowboys are portrayed by the media and so on...

The term has been used in denim for many events reckless. Although I agree that if people know and understand the cowboy...
I think the problem is unless you are a "True Cowboy", you cannot possibly understand the life style. In my mind "Cowboy" is something you earn. Earned by hard work, determination, guts, morals, values, etc. Cowboy is a unique, "Club". If you want in, you gota proove yourself, and be accepted as such by other Cowboy's. People dont get that, they think that the cloths make the man......any gunsel can go to a western store and play dress up! Not a one of you can say you dont walk into any random spot and see someone dressed up "Cowboy" and imediatly size em' up?!?! If there fake its immediatly apparent. And thats where the problem is, I take great pride in who and what i am. Iv'e earned it, they havent. They give the rest of us a bad name and are the reason for people writing articles against cowboys. Now dont get me wrong, everybody has the right to dress as they please, but theres a difference between just wearing the cloths and tryin to act the part! Society today cant handle someone who is completly sure of them selves and who they are, i think it scares them that we never change, ive been a cowboy since i can remember, while everyone in school was goin with the fads i never wavired, and i was the outcast for it.When i was Rodeoin, and then Cowboyin i v'e heard so many times how my life was a joke, and i needed to stop playing, grow up, take some responsibility...get a job, etc. Cowboy wasnt a real job! funny thing was... some of the people tellin me this were behind on rent, bills, lived diliquent lives, constantly screwin up, etc. While i was ridin full time, goin to college, payin my bills, and some of my family's bills, and stayin out of trouble.....Damn am i proud to be a COWBOY!

I sit down at a bar or a restaurant table 'n the barkeep or waitress asks: "What'll it be, cowboy? Not in a derogatory tone or manner... just the obvious... I s'pose. I don't care what anybody else thinks about cowboys. Those who don't already know are a waste of time to explain it.
A round downrange cannot be recalled.
I never said listening to new ideas is something bad. I never said people should stop learning. I try to learn new things every day and I believe the more you learn the more you realize you know very little, that there's so much out there that you just don't understand. That's me anyway.
I do however think people need to have a set of core values they are not willing to compromise. That's all. I don't think we're better off thinking life's a joke and we just can be one thing today and its opposite tomorrow just because it kinda serves us better. I think we ought to stand for something.
There are people out there who think laws are mere suggestions and good and bad don't really exist, it's like we live in some fuzzy world where nobody is certain of anything. Pardon me, but murder is wrong, and if you don't understand that you belong in a mental hospital. It's as simple as that. Core values, basic principles, that's all I'm talking about.
I've no respect at all for those who have no respect for human life. I'm not just talking about killers, but also racists, extremists and the like. This is about who you are, not what you wear or where you live. I could own a spread in Ohio instead of Wyoming and be the same person, who I am doesn't change with the wind or GPS coordinates. That's the point I was trying to make. Values, what we got inside, defines who we are. I could go become some repairman and hold the same core values. The hat doesn't own me, I own it, that's how it goes, it doesn't make me who I am.
True enough, been treated like dirt by lots of people in big towns, but still, that's my experience and by no means a national standard. I don't come here to tell anybody that town people are a plague or anything of that sort. Each of us has a choice, again, it's about values, and we all decide how we're gonna treat others and what we do is nobody else's fault.
So, just because you wear a hat you ought be some ignorant man? Since when a piece or clothing or a job defines the person? I still remember the story about the Zebra Dun or that Cowboy in the Continental suit. Don't we all? I took offense to what that guy wrote, but I'm not going to sit here and start saying all UK people are that way or that they all think a cowboy is some ignorant man. I'm not going to go judge.
This wasn't about hats or boots, this is simply about the misguided use of a word to imply ignorance and intolerance, this is about the people get branded because of that.

I thought I had agreed that the term often is used improper. However, clothes often does make the man as in the way to world views us. It's not my thought on the matter but studies prove time and time again, we label people by how they dress. If you want to present a professional imagine, "Dress for success" a book that is at least 20 years old study this. Wall Street doesn't like to do business with people wearing rags, and when a person wears a cowboy hat, they are label as Cowboys and if another cowboy views them and thinks they are wearing a cheap hat they label them as Drug Store and the clothes which make a man does receives judgment. However, I do agree and respect your views. I'm guilty for this too. When my son came home several months back with a class mate who was wearing "Skinny pants" all I could think was "He appears Strange". Not that the pants makes the kid bad, just different as me wearing plaid in the 70's. Different, not bad.

Well, it's true what you say about the hat, I'm guilty of that myself and worst, I've done it without thinking or stopping to measure my own words. Unfair to people.
I had a Bailey I loved, got messed up bad. I try to buy what I can that's reasonably priced and will last for some time, however, I keep in mind the hat's gonna go fast, and that's a reality I need to live with.
I do have one made by the Jackson Hole Hat Co, I keep that one for when I go out and stuff. I had a couple Resistols to spare, but I usually end up giving stuff away when people visit, amazing how many wear a 7 1/4.
As for Stetsons, last I bought was a present for my father, and that's it. Can't bring myself to buy another one.
Now, that said, I saw what you posted about the Texas Hatters. That RCA hat looks mighty nice, and I'm tempted here to splurge a bit and get me something nice. I seen some hats at Walmart, but I leave that for kids playing cowboy and halloween parties.

Years ago I read a book titled "You're OK, I'm OK" which points out that it is OK to have and share different points of view. Let's face it, each of us have something important likely to state which is derived due to the different influences which helped us come to a particular thought.
However, as one comment shared, some words get used negatively. Be that word Cowboy or be the word liberal. Often used wrong. Often used to point out something on our mind, good or bad.
I look at liberal ideas because in order to make change, one needs to often be innovated. To act with innovation, such as those who built successfully the west, they too were innovated. That part of mind is liberal to try something new and not be in the same state of mind. It also means to allow to understand those from the left or right frame of mind understanding their thinking. Our at least giving them the respect to listen to them.
I suppose if a man desires to be ignorant, that is his choice. I think people become ignorant when they refuse to hear another point of view or are afraid to sway from the norm just because of prejudice or the views on how another person sees them. I'm a Cowboy, I once was a sailor, Some believe I'm to right wing, others think I'm a liberal. I just try not to be to quick to judge and respect those who use tasteful manners. Regardless, you're OK.....I'm OK.....
Roger Edison
First let me say, that I will wear the title that comes with the hat and wear it proudly. COWBOY - though I am not a 'real cowboy'!
At that, may I say, it is difficult to argue against prejudice with terms that also show prejudice, bigotry and ignorance. If you use ANY term to generalize or group together individuals as to what you have been brainwashed into thinking their difference is harming you - than you are no better than this British fella.
I could talk to you about the 'cowboy' term or the redneck label. I could go to the extreme words that label race or color. I could show the harm of labels on religions or faith BUT there is a much, much broader prejudice that is being fostered to extreme in this country with 'bright' words of hatred and prejudice.
Maybe because the term (labels) is so subtle it is thrown out without much thought. It is used to try to heighten a fact that has no base or truth. I am talking about the labels now promoted by politics and the labels that are dividing our country. These labels are used by selfish, bigoted and self promoting individuals who see gain in dividing Americans. They think by labeling other Americans they can condemn and ridicule these Americans of difference in belief to a place that is less than what they believe. The terms are even used to show fault in fellow Americans as to place blame on what is wrong in their lives. The terms have become so deep seated in blame that it will foster hatred and prejudice. The terms conjure up comic forms of identification even as the wearing of a cowboy hat is often laughed at.
I am speaking of the political labels that divide America - ' liberal or conservative '... Stop and think people! Do you hate liberals? Do you think all conservatives are short haired rednecks? If you have to use terms of conservative or liberal to describe a blame on an American - you have a problem! You have been brainwashed by a political party and have no ability to think for yourself as an American. Your neighbors are liberal or conservative and that means you live in America... Your brother, sister, cousin, mother, father, or even your minister might be of a dfferent political belief and they are not to blame for all your social woes. Stop showing your ignorance and prejudice BECAUSE it makes you even less than this 'British fella'.
Try this - the next time you start to label another American with 'conservative or liberal' simply put in 'cowboy'. It might make you stop and think...
Alright, I am an ignorant guy but I don't care much for politics and at least I can say I believe in what I believe and that has nothing to do with democrats or republicans because to me they're all the same.
I used to word 'liberal' to describe a person who is open to discard any and all tradition or value in favor of a new view. If I failed to clarify that, my mistake. I believe in a set of values set in stone that I'm not willing to change for money, fortune, women or anything else. I wasn't try to talk about political parties, I was trying to talk about core values.
Words have many meanings, and I for one tend to ask what you mean when you use a word that might strike me as offensive. Too bad I couldn't ask the author of that article, but I do know the term cowboy has been used and abused for decades. I know what's really attached to the term cowboy, and I will say it ain't nothing to be ashamed of, so yeah, when people use the word as an insult I'm more than entitled to respond and will do so.
If you're a democrat or a republican, that means little to me. I simply don't care. I know enough good and bad people on both sides and even more caught in the middle.
Me? Call me a cowboy, a bum, a stinky cowhand, you call me whatever you want. I am a man, a christian, and I believe in certain principles and traditions that form the foundation of who I am. That's how I see myself. If that's being an ignorant, then I'm a proud know-nothing, and I won't even try hide that fact not one bit. I don't care much if a person is rich or poor, educated or some guy never finished elementary school; I care about what's inside that person and what that person does, the rest don't matter to me.
As for politicians and political parties, I would tell you what I think of them all but I doubt this place will allow the language that comes to mind when I think about the subject. I don't hate people because they're republican or democrats, I do have a problem with those who lie to get elected, rob the public blind with obscure deals and stuff nobody knows about, and then lie some more when needed to keep milking the cow for decades. That's who I have a problem with, and as far as I'm concerned, they all belong in prison for driving this country straight to hell without a care.
So, gotta go now, this saddle bum has some stuff to take care of.

Cowboy Mentality is not a new term. The word cowboy has been used towards many events of recklessness. While I strongly agree, if people knew and had an understanding of cowboys, modern and from the past that perhaps they would choose to use a different word to describe reckless or hard headed thinking with terms that did not include "COWBOY".
This topic often becomes the "term" beating the dead horse. I'm proud to be a cowboy and living the western life. And very true the term COWBOY often is used poorly rather than with the reflections of being Proud, Hard Working, Patriot, God Fearing, and such. Furthermore, perhaps the once English colony AUSTRALIA which has a faster growth of western living cowboys reflecting the American West way of life should tell us something since they are not trying to live as there once fellow ENGLISHMEN.
Cowboys are filled with the mystic romance of the west. Solely a perception and not intended as fact.
I agree that often people will use this term Cowboy mentally loosely as if cowboys can not think in a smart manner or perhaps with an open mind. As this may even hold some truth knowing most cowboys tend to be very conservative. I also recall a commentator use the term cowboy towards the ATF agents during the 1990's foul up in Waco. I believe their quote was "They stormed the property like cowboys".
However, can we blame those who write loosely preforming such poor research of words? I say, I will ignore their lack of skill to better bring points to be made clearly and continued to live by the code. I'm a Cowboy....and sure it is more than just wearing my hat that makes me a Cowboy. Reckless, perhaps in my teens but today wiser...Perhaps you should share what I wrote weeks back on this subject with the author of that story. However, one thing for sure, people love to see the word COWBOY and that words sells stories. COWBOY.....Yee yaaa.....Until I see a better way of life, I live being a Cowboy too. I've got my boots, I've got my hat.....and I have Texas to call home which is bigger than England. but don't tell anyone how wonderful it is to live as a cowboy.....otherwise maybe everyone will want to be apart of this spirit.

I can tell you this, and I do so because I've seen this myself, most people have no clue what this is about, and no matter how hard you try to explain things, it's no use, none, they'll believe what they want to believe and that's the end of it.
It's everything, and I suppose I let most of it bother me and that's my own doing. I'm just tired of this branding operation the media has against a culture and a lifestyle that's as honest and honorable as any other out there, if not more so.
