fast draw

I am curious to find out the earliest reference to a fast draw gunfight either in books or movies. For those of us who have a historical interest in Westerns, we know that the high noon shoot out where the bad guy goes for his gun first and the good guy guns him down is pure fiction. How did this fantasy come about?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
