Trevor Brazile won his seventh PRCA all-around world championship on Day 10 at NFR 2009, joining Ty Murray in an exclusive club of two. In nearly a century of competition, no other rodeo cowboy has ever demonstrated the all-around skills of these two competitors. So it begs the question: Who is the Greatest Rodeo Cowboy of All Time? Trevor or Ty? (Both come from Texas, so that state can be proud.) Or is there an argument for someone else?

both are great but not tops

I think both those guys are great, but its the no name, never won cowboys that get on every sunday because its in there blood that we need to remember, and support. Ive ridden bulls twice and watch my son do it every week. My other son team ropes and I tell you watching those kids nurse blisters and bruises gives me great respect for every rodeo cowboy.

Triple Ditto!

This reply was supposed to go lower down where someone mentioned Wranglers and one cowboy involved in the development of Wranglers, saying he ought to be the greatest cowboy around because of that. Somehow my ditto to that got elevated up to here. I edited this in when I saw where it had been placed.

I think Wranglers are the best denim pants available and agree a hundred percent with you. I remember struggling with Levis and putting up with Lee Riders. Thank God for Blue Bell Overalls, the original maker of Wrangler, and Rodeo Ben, Casey Jones, Jim Shoulders, Casey Tibss, Freckles Brown, and Deb Copenhaver--all of whom were involved in testing and design of Wranglers. If there were others, I don't know their names.

I wonder how many people know that 13 MWZ, found on Wrangler labels inside the pant, means 13th prototype mens western jean with a zipper?

Howdy
By any chance, does anyone know if there are any rodeos or horse shows in New York or New Jersey or Conneticult or Pennsylvania this year?

To me they are all great, As the sport evolves, they were great in their day. Its hard to compare someone from 20 yrs ago with someone today.

I agree. The concept of the "greatest rodeo cowboy of all time" is far too subjective. As the sport evolves each has different competitive advantages.

Ditto

I saw many of the old-timers at the Woodward Elks Rodeo in Woodward, Oklahoma, and at Amarillo and Canyon in Texas. Jim Shoulders always comes to my mind. It took more to be a worlds champ in the old days than it does now. Most of those fellows had to make a lving at something besides rodeo.

greatest

Any man who has the guts to get on a bull and then tie himself to the animal, is "the greatest rodeo cowboy of all time" As far as I'm concerned. Not too many things in this world will make a man run for his life after he's done trying it.

greatest cowboy of all time

well personally knowing many of these professional cowboys including trevor brazile i would have to say there are multiple "greatest cowboys ever". for instance in bull riding there was lane frost, saddle bronc there was ty murray, calf roping there was roy cooper and im willing to bet that even trevor will agree that roy his father in law is the greatest calf roper of all time. trevor and roy are some of my greatest friends. roys youngest son tuf has always been one of my very best friends and we still stay in touch. his brothers clif and clint were also some of my great friends. i can tell you now there isn't just one greatest cowboy.

One summer I thought I'd earn a little money at the rodeo and got on a bull. He rode me for about a second, or a little less.

Greatest Cowboy of ALL Time?

Chris LeDoux, Kitt Carson, John Wayne, Gene Autry, the person who brought the horse to the America's, the cowboy who is still the 'working cowboy' today?

You can see I am having a problem with the '''ever''' thing. And again, we have the definition of the '''cowboy''' term. Perhaps I am reading too much into this and just need to say Chris LeDoux. Why?

I have never heard of him doing a wrong and he was taken from us way too early. He did the 'cowboy' thing of riding and all. But along with all of that he had a spirit that busted loose with saying, "Here I am and here is my life as a cowboy". He made the public see and hear the 'cowboy spirit' with his singing and the 'cowboy way' that presented a positive image for little bucharoos to become. I just liked the and I am sad every day I hear 'WATCHA GONNA DO WITH A COWBOY'.

Greatest Cowboy ever

I would have to say that it's a tie between, Lane Frost, TC Holloway, Donny Gay, Glen Keeley and Chris LeDoux.
Lane because he was just an all around great guy and a great bull rider. TC Holloway because he was also a really great guy and one heck of a bronc rider. Donny Gay for being the only man to win 8 bull riding championships and being a great guy. Glen Keeley because he was one of the best if not the best Canadian bull rider and just an overall great guy. Chris LeDoux since he was a great bareback rider, great singer of ranching and rodeo life, and an overall great guy! It's to hard to choose which one since there all great!

I think I would have to go with Chris LeDoux, not only is he the 1976 bare back champ but a song writer about the rodeo life

Of all time ?

Casey Tibbs , you talk talent and personallity then there you have it . If your talking just money and the way these guys rodeo now it's a whole nuther game . I'd go with Ty , of the Rodeo hands that are out there he has done the most for the sport and he accually knows which end of a cow to feed.

You try to come out here and scratch out a living .

Of all time?

I think Casy Tibbs is as good a name to put on top as any. I just have to add Casey's traveling buddy, Gerald Roberts. Gerald earned his gold buckles and had fun doing it, yet never lost his values or compromised. Besides, he was the first champion to endorse Wrangler Jeans. That alone is worth having his name put on the list. Don'tcha think?
