Hats in church
Location
In the June/July issue on page 52, there was a small article on hat etiquette. It says that your hat is to be removed entering a place of worship. It's probably true for traditional churches. It is not true of any Cowboy Churches I've attended in Texas. Hats only come off during prayers.
I really think you should not be wearing hats in church. I think it is not right at all. Unsure why they let them do this. This has to change. florida medical malpractice

I use it as an indicator. If I see anyone wearing a Hat (cap) indoors, I automatically know that they are Jewish and I can go to them and say Shalom!, and not be worried about offending them. Other than the Jewish (from their religious custom) all gentlemen remove their hats when entering a room, or in the presence of a lady. A gentleman would never think of wearing a hat (cap) at the dinner table.
The exception is public places such as saloons and open indoor areas. Cowboys always looked upon themselves as gentlemen, and would act as gentlemen unless the situation called for a change.

OOPS, this was a double click, but I'll take the opportunity to expand my thoughts. I am follically impaired. As a bald person, I almost always cover my head when outside. Those of you with hair just don't understand how bad a sunburn feels on a bald head. I've even been burnt under a mesh cap. My wife chuckled when she noticed the mesh pattern to my sunburned head. In cold weather, it's a no-brainer. Those with hair have no idea how much heat loss there is from a bald head in cold weather.
But, I NEVER wear my hats or caps indoors. It's just not what a gentleman does.

Hats in Texas are not viewed as they are elsewhere.
I think it is only common courtesy to remove your hat in chruch or at any gathering where it obstucts those behind you from viewing a centered speaker or scene. In some dance halls you are required to remove your hat on the dance floor and when you enter a court room. We began to lose touch with hat etiquette when everybody started wearing ball caps everwhere they go including women. In years past when men spoke to women they removed their head gear to show respect wouldn't this same thought process carry over when you enter a chruch?
For those who do remove their western hat in chruch how do the women who wear the western hat fit into this scenario?

Gotta agree that a hat is worn outside . Maby the only exception is an auction barn.

I'm curious if anyone knows the rationale behind why it is bad manners to wear hats indoors. I can understand the thinking in a movie theatre, but I'm sure the 'rule' was around before that. Is it simply to not obstruct the view of people behind you, like in a church setting. Hmm....
You can leave your horse to water, I'll have a drink.
I believe hats were designed to protect one's head from the elements; heat, sun, rain, etc. Since those elements are not present indoors, there is no need to wear a hat.
I fully believe it is rude to wear a hat indoors.
I believe hats should never be worn inside a building regardless what that building is or what type of hat one wears.
I do remember back in the 40's and 50's, if I wore a hat indoors, my Dad or Grandpa would knock it off my head.
I get so tired of seeing a man sitting at a resturant table, eating, with a hat or ball cap on.
Hats are for outdoors, not indoors.
