The Last Western You Watched?
Howdy Everybody,
Okay simply, what was the last Western you watched? Be it American made or a Spaghetti. A classic A+ picture or a low budget "B"?. Here's what I saw over the last week, what are you watching?
1)"The Showdown" (1950)
-William Elliot
Plot: IMDB
Shadrach Jones, ex-Texas State Policeman, has a ruthless determination to find and kill the man who shot his brother in the back and stole the money with which he was to buy a ranch for he and Shadrach. At the saloon-hotel ran by Adelaide, Shadrach is convinced that one of the cowhands on a cattle drive by Captain McKellar to Montana is the killer, and he takes the trail-herd boss job to identify the man. McKellar preaches to Jones that he should forget revenge and let the law of retribution take care of the killer. Shadrach's hard driving of the men and his hunt for the killer makes him bitterly hated, and his retribution quest ends in a manner he has not anticipated.
Hex's Review: Fun little "B" movie. Plenty of action and a murder mystery to solve. Not a bad way to spend a lazy afternoon.
2) Kid From Texas" (1950)
- Audie Murphy. Gail Storm
Yet another "true" account of the life of Billy The Kid
Hex's Review: Like most of Hollywood's "Billy The Kid" movies, this one bends and stretches the facts quite a bit, but Murphy does a good job and there's a good bit of action. Very entertaining.
3)__"Duel At Silver Creek" (1952)
-Audie Murphy
Plot: IMDB
A gang of claim jumpers is infesting the territory, gaining ownership of undermanned mining operations through extortion...and leaving no live witnesses. But one victim, quick-drawing gambler Luke Cromwell, escapes. Meanwhille, Marshal Lightnin' Tyrone is also after the gang; recovering from one raid, he meets femme fatale Opal Lacy, who may not be healthy for him to know. When Luke, now calling himself the Silver Kid, joins forces with Marshal Tyrone, the gang had better watch out ...unless something drives a wedge between the new allies.
Hex's Review: I like Audie Murphy, he made some good movies, but this one is kind of mediocre. Certainly not a BAD movie, just...kind of forgettable.
4)"Money, Women and Guns" (1959)
-Jock Mahoney
Plot: IMDB
. Just after making a large gold discovery, an old prospector is ambushed and killed by three masked men but manages to kill two of his attackers before he dies. He also manages to scribble out a will, which is given to detective "Silver" Ward Hogan, who is hired to track down the legitimate heirs and to try to find the third murderer.
Hex's Review: This was a fun movie (and a great title) Plenty of action and a good story. The only thing that didn't really work was the love story sub-plot. Mahoney and co-star Kim Hunter had no real chemistry between them. Other than that this was a fine western adventure.
5)_"Ride The High Country"(1962)
-Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea
Plot: IMDB
An ex-lawman is hired to transport gold from a mining community through dangerous territory. But what he doesn't realize is that his partner and old friend is plotting to double-cross him.
Hex's Review: One of the greats. Scott and McCrea are perfect as the two aging Ex-Lawmen. Excellent performances, cinematography and direction (by Sam Peckinpah) A classic all the_________________________________

"Stagecoach To Dancers Rock" (1962)
-Warren Stevens, Martin Landau
Plot :IMDB
Six passengers in a stagecoach are abandoned by their driver when he thinks that one of them has smallpox.
Hex's Review: Well acted, but predictable low budget film. Very little action and even less logic make up this movie. Feels almost like it was made back in the '40's by Monagram or Republic Studios. Worth one viewing if your a western fan, but after that, forget it.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of

"Catlow" (1971)
-Yul Brynner, Richard Crenna, Leonard Nimoy
Plot :IMDB
Marshall Cowan and the mercenary Miller are both separately hunting the outlaw Catlow. During the Civil War both Cowan and the always smiling Catlow were comrades. Catlow helps Cowan, when he is wounded in the right leg by an arrow from the Apaches, despite Cowan hunting him. Catlow escapes with help of his gang. Catlow then robes a Mexican gold shipment, worth $ 2,000,000. Catlow flies with the stolen gold through the dangerous territory of the Apaches who besides of Miller, Cowan and the Mexican cavalry, are hunting for him and his gang of outlaws.
Hex's Review: While it's kind of strange to see Yul Brynner in a western NOT wearing his traditional black hat and outfit, this is still a fun, light hearted film. Plenty of good western action and stunts. A good story (based on a Louis L'Amour novel) and some fine acting. It's a treat to see Nimoy as the bad ass bounty hunter looking for Brynner's outlaw. Brynner had a great charm and it really shows in this film. Not a classic, but highly entertaining.

Hello all,
In the last few weeks I watched High Noon, The Searchers, and High Plains Drifter. I am a big Eastwood fan when it comes to Westerns and the Dirty Harry series! Gotta love John Wayne as well.
"sing a song about the heartland, sing a song about my life" George strait
A Few Dollars More. I love the Dollars trilogy. When I was a teenager, my Dad and I would watch these movies over and over again. The Man With No Name? Classic.
5:10 To Yuma both original and remake.

It wasn't a Western, but is was a horse movie. I really enjoyed it 'cuz it took me back to the days of 1973 when Secretariat generated enthusiasm for the equine sports. I remember watching all 3 races of the Triple Crown that year. The most memorable of the three races had to be the Belmont where Big Red shattered the record there with his 31 length victory over Sham and the rest of the field. It was amazing! The movie brought back those memories. Only Zenyatta last year brought back the excitement to approach that of Secretariat. AND, I do feel that Zenyatta would have won had her jockey not gotten tied up in the pack.
Kansas Jack
"The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr" (1993)
-Bruce Campbell
Plot:
When U.S. Marshal Brisco County, Sr. is murdered by John Bly and his gang of outlaws, the robber barons of San Francisco's Westerfield Club hire Brisco County, Jr. as a bounty hunter to round them up. Brisco meets a lot of interesting people along the way, including rival bounty hunter Lord Bowler, and the Westerfield Club's stuffy lawyer, Socrates Poole. He also learns of a mysterious object which John Bly would do anything to possess, for the supernatural power it can give him.
Hex's Review" Pilot film for the short lived, but absolutely brilliant, Sci-Fi Western. Despite only lasting one season, this is one of my favorite shows. The pilot (like the whole series) is filled with action, humor and a great sense of fun. Not your traditional western, but then. it wasn't supposed to be.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of
gunsmoke...the other was Death itself.
Monte Walsh with Tom Selleck. It's one of my favorites.
"The Sons Of Katie Elder" (1965)
-John Wayne
Plot: IMDB
The Elder boys return to Clearwater, Texas for their Mother's funeral. John the eldest is a well known gunfighter and trouble follows him wherever he goes. The boys try to get back their ranch from the towns gunsmith who won it from their father in a card game with which he was shortly murdered there after but not before getting through the troubles that come with the Elders name.
Hex's Review: One of Wayne's best 1960's westerns. Good acting, great story, plenty of action, some nice doses of humor and solidly directed by Henry Hathaway. Highly enjoyable for fans of the western genre.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of

The Cowboy and the Senorita. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. This was the first film they made together. Roy was still married at the time, and Dale didn't really want to do the film, but it was the beginning of many films they made before Roy's wife passed and he eventually married Dale. The rest is history of course. It was great to listen to the Sons of the Pioneers. Speaking of which, if you ever get the chance to hear the New Pioneers, they are a great tribute to the old Cowboy songs of the west.
"A Day Of Fury" (1956)
-Dale Robertson
Plot: IMDB
While on a manhunt the Marshal is saved by a passing gunslinger named Jagade. It is a time when law is coming to the west and when the gunslinger shows up in the Marshals' town the Marshal is caught between the town citezens fears and the debt he owes the gunslinger. The situation is further complicated by a previous relationship between the Marshal's fiancée and Jagade.
Hex's Review: What should have been a standard "B" movie, surprisingly turns out to be a very well made film. The action is minimal, but the story, writing and acting are quite good. A treat that I wasn't expecting.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of

Open Range. I've seen it dozens of times, but it so good, it needs to be watched again. Robert Duvall is one of the best actors, and this 'new' Western is one of my all time favorites! Watch it again!
"The Long Ride Home" (2003)
-Randy Travis
Plot:
Mistaken for a gunfighter, farmer Jack Fowler kills a man in self defense, then abandons his family and goes on the run and leads the the life of a shootist until he finally makes his way back home.
Hexs Review: Despite being beautifully filmed and having a good cast, this film is very slow moving. It lacks any real action or tension. It's not a BAD movie, it's just..kinda dull. Randy Travis does sing a nice song over the ending credits.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of

Lonesome Dove!
Location
Lonesome Dove never gets old. By far the best western ever. I will admit I did shed a tear when Gus died.
"Whiskey And Ghosts" (1976)
Plot: IMDB
A snake-oil salesman is chased across the desert by a gang of Mexican bandits. He finds out, however, that he is being protected by the spirits of Davey Crockett, Pecos Bill and Johnny Appleseed.
Hex.s Review: Truly god awful supernatural western comedy. The film fails on all counts. avoid it like the plague.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of

"Riding Shotgun" (1954)
-Randolph Scott
Plot: IMDB
When a stagecoach guard tries to warn a town of an imminent raid by a band of outlaws, the people mistake him for one of the gang
Hex's Review: Minor league Randolph Scott film. The acting is good, but the plot is simple, the action is minimal and the attempts at humor fall flat.
And Scott does a truly unnecessary and annoying voice over narration. I like Scott but this is not one of his better films

Just completed Open Range, along with the bonus DVD disc that discusses the plight of the open range operators in an era when barbed-wire fence was squeezing them out of business. This disc also highlighted the planning and direction that went into the phenomenal gunfight scenes in the movie's climax. Actors Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall discussed their research of the topic and their strong desire to depict free range operators accurately and authentically. They did an outstanding job!
"The Lone Ranger" (1956)
-Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels
Plot: IMDB
A a greedy cattle baron wants to seize a silver-rich mountain on an Indian reservation and devises plans to have the Indians relocated or exterminated to achieve his ends.
Hex's Review: I love this movie. A wonderful, Saturday morning matinee style western adventure film. In other words, it's fun for kids of all ages.
Simple, but well written story, plenty of action, beautifully filmed, a good supporting cast and of course the legendary Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels in their signature roles. I fully admit to having a fondness for The Ranger And Tonto and this is one of their best adventures. The folks who are going to be in next years new movie had better do a good job. They have a lot to live up to.

"100 Rifles" (1969)
-Jim Brown, Raquel Welch, Burt Reynolds
Plot: Rotten Tomatoes
Lyedecker (Jim Brown) is the Arizona lawman who travels to Mexico in search of Yaqui Joe (Burt Reynolds). Joe has made an illegal withdrawal of $6,000 from the band in Phoenix to help finance his tribes's uprising against the Mexican government. Sarita (Raquel Welch) is the local woman who is friendly towards the Indian leaders. Both men are tracked by General Verdugo (Fernando Lamas), the career-minded military man who realizes a victory could boost his station in high-society and politics. Also on hand is the American railroad agent Grimes (Dan O'Herlihy). The battle ensues between the Indians and the government troops as Lyedecker and Joe form a temporary alliance to survive. They are captured by the troops, but the Indians instead of the calvary come to the rescue in this routine western taken from a novel by Robert MacLeod. .
Hex's Review: DEAR GOD! Raquel Welch is so HOT!.......Oh, and Jim Brown and Burt Reynolds are in the movie too. Plenty of action and a good story make this a very entertaining film (did I mention Raquel Welch..and extreme hotness?)

A very cheesy film,,,,
But Raquel was indeed HOT!
"Young Guns" (1988)
"Young Guns II" (1990)
Hollywood, again, tells the story of Billy The Kid and The Lincoln County Wars
Hex s Review: While, hardly a couple of western classics, these films are still extremely entertaining. Plenty of action and adventure and fun. I thoroughly enjoy them.

"Joe Kidd" (1972)
-Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall
Plot: IMDB
An ex-bounty hunter reluctantly helps a wealthy landowner and his henchmen track down a Mexican revolutionary leader.
Hex's Review: Despite a great cast, director and writer, this is probably my least favorite Eastwood western. It's decent film, it just isn't all that exciting. The acting is fine but the film just lacks. Not a bad film, just not as good as I hoped it would be.

"The Valley Of Gwangi" (1969)
-James Franciscus
Plot:
At the end of the 19th century, an American Wild West show, traveling in Mexico, discovers a hidden valley filled with prehistoric beasts.
Hex's Review: The very definition of the term "weird western". James Franciscus (the poor mans Charlton Heston) stars in this variation on the "King Kong" theme. While this film is nowhere as great as "Kong" It still is a highly entertaining mix of western and monster movie genres.
With great special FX from the legendary Ray Harryhausen. Lots of fun to watch.

"The Gunslingers" (2009)
Plot: Netflix (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/The_Gunslingers/70150468?trkid=2361637...)
While roaming the wild plains on a quest to find a cache of hidden riches, sharp-shooting bounty hunter Butch (John Elliott) and his outlaw companions come across a deadly gang with supernatural powers in this stylized Western. As the hunt for the gold treasure becomes competitive -- and violent -- Butch, morally questionable Rattler Fenton (Brad Allen) and vengeful Akemi (Narisa Suzuki) must confront the evil and powerful Mondego (Ben Hall).
Hex's Review: Dear God, this movie is a turd! Terrible acting, horrible dialog, bad special FX, the only good thing about this film is 1) the music and 2) the scenery, outside of that , this film should be avoided at ALL costs.

"Villa Rides" (1968)
-Yul Brynner. Robert Mitchum, Charles Bronson
Plot: IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063775/)
Pulled into the Mexican Revolution by his own greed, Texas gunrunner & pilot Lee Arnold joins bandit-turned-patriot Pancho Villa & his band of dedicated men in a march across Mexico battling the Colorados & stealing women's hearts as they go. But each has a nemesis among his friends: Arnold is tormented by Fierro, Villa's right-hand-man; and Villa must face possible betrayal by his own president's naiveté.

Plot: IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043276/)
A U.S. Marshall and two deputies rescue a cattle rustler from a lynch mob led by a local cattle baron convinced that the rustler also killed his son.
Hex's Review: Well made, if unoriginal western adventure. The cast does a great job in making a mediocre script watchable.
All the "crossing the desert" cliche's are here. Sand storms, poisoned water holes, people tuning on each other, etc. Entertaining, but not really memorable.

The last western I watched was John Ford's Stagecoach. It was from 1939, argueably the best year for motion pictures. Not a bad scene in the movie, chronicling a couple of firsts. It was John Wayne's breakout role and John Ford's new attraction to Monument Valley, Utah. Plus subtler trends in movies such as the "bad" guy as hero. Don't confuse with a campy version shot a nubber of years later with the same title, but a questionable cast.
You can leave your horse to water, I'll have a drink.
""Triggerman" (2010)
Terrance Hill, Paul Sorvino
Plot : IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1726622/plotsummary)
A drifter (Hill) comes back to the town of Holy Sand and wants to help the locals by building a hospital, but needs money. In the sequel to Doc West (not necessary but helpful to watch first), Doc West (Hill) is still in high demand as a doctor. After half the town gets hurt in a bar fight he realizes its time to open up a hospital. He turns to the only way he knows in order to make money, a poker tournament. When an evil Dutchman rides in to town, (to compete and stop West from getting the money he needs) West must decide what is more important, the money or love.
Hex's Review:
Basically "Doc West Part 2". This film picks up immediately after the original film and follows "Doc" on a new adventure This film suffers from the same flaws as the original, lousy acting from the supporting players and very light on action. But it has all of the same good things too. Fine performances from leads Terrance Hill and Paul Sorvino, beautiful cinematography and some fun humor. A low budget film to be sure, but it's not awful. Its a decent little movie. I wish it had been better, but I have seen much much worse.

"Doc West" (2010)
-Terence Hill, Paul Sorvino
Plot: DVD Talk
The American West. Mysterious cowboy "Doc" West (Terence Hill) has just transferred by wire some serious cash from the Santa Fe post office to one of the finest boarding schools for girls in Boston...right before the post office is robbed by desperados. Unable to give rapid chase because of his horse's split hoof, West tracks the robbers, until he comes upon Silver (Benjamin Petry), a young boy suffering from a dislocated shoulder (his horse threw him and ran off), and a more immediate concern: a rattler moving in for a strike. West carefully draws down on the rattler, and from 300 yards, shoots his tail off...as a warning to the other snakes, he later tells Silver. Utilizing a bit of positive imagery misdirection, West re-sets the boy's arm, causing Silver to suspect that West is not only a hellava shot, but also a physician--a theory West quietly (too quietly) denies. Taking Silver back to his small desert town, Holysand, West immediately makes himself known to the wrong people, including taking vicious henchman Garvey (Alessio Di Clemente) in a poker game. Garvey works for town big wheel Nathan Mitchell (Boots Southerland), who's ruthlessly acquiring farmland for his expanding cattle herd. Sheriff Basehart (Paul Sorvino) locks up West for his own good (after Garvey accuses him of cheating at cards) as much as for the chance to talk to someone interesting for a change. Denise Stark (Clare Carey) isn't a doctor, but she knows one when she sees one, especially after the jailed West gives her the correct prescription for an ailing patient. The arrival of Millie Mitchell (Mary Petruolo), Nathan's daughter, sets into motion a final showdown between her father and farmers the Baker family--with "Doc" West caught right in the middle.
Hex's Review: While it's great to see Terence Hill back in the saddle again, this film is a bit on the dull side. The action is very light and for some reason all of the female actors are terrible.
On the plus side, Hill still has that same charm he had back in his spaghetti western days and Paul Sorvino looks like he's having a great time. Also, the film is beautifully shot in New Mexico. If your expecting lots of Spaghetti western style action and violence you'll be disappointed , this is more of a "Family "style western. Not bad, but it could have been so much better.
The film did spawn a sequel called "Triggerman" which I'll probably be watching next week.
He had two companions, this Jonah Hex...one was the acrid smell of

"The Good Guys And The Bad Guys" (1969)
-Robert Mitchum, George Kennedy
Plot: IMDB
Marshal Flagg, an aging lawman about to be retired, hears that his old nemesis, the outlaw McKaye, is back in the area and planning a robbery. Riding out to hunt down McKaye, Flagg is captured by McKaye's gang and finds out that McKaye is no longer the leader of the gang, but is considered just an aging relic by the new leader, a youngster named Waco. Waco orders Mackaye to shoot Flagg, and when Mackaye refuses Waco abandons both of them. Flagg then takes Mackaye back to town only to find out that he has been "retired", and when he sees how clueless and incompetent the new marshal and the city fathers are, he persuades Mackaye that it is up to the two of them to stop Waco and his gang from ravaging the town.
Hex's Review: Entertaining, light hearted western adventure. Plenty of action and humor and the two lead actors do a great job. My only complaint was a truly God awful song that was played over the opening credits and during a few key scenes. Other than that, this is a enjoyable move.

Plot: IMDB
Mysterious Will Lockhart delivers supplies to storekeeper Barbara Waggoman at Coronado, an isolated town in Apache country. Before long, he's tangled with Dave Waggoman, vicious son of autocratic rancher Alec and cousin of sweet Barbara. But he sticks around town, his presence a catalyst for changes in people's lives, searching for someone he doesn't know...who's been selling rifles to the Apaches.

"High Plains Drifter" (1973)

Violent tale of revenge with Eastwood perfectly playing his trademark role of "The Mysterious stranger". Heavily influenced by the Sergio Leone/Spaghetti westerns of the time. A classic of it's kind and one of my all time favorite Eastwood movies.

Last week I went to see the remake of True Grit. I must say that the acting was superb, although The Duke is difficult to replace as Rooster Cogburn. Just read today that Jeff Bridges and the young new actress are both Oscar nominated for their performance. A must see for anyone wanting that western travel through time...on another note I have been recording old classics at home...just watched John Wayne in the 1949 film Red River and loved every bit of it! Some terrific lines, scenery and camera work for the time.
"Two Mules For Sister Sara" (1970)
-Clint Eastwood, Shirley McClaine
Plot: IMDB
Set in Mexico, a nun called Sara is rescued from three cowboys by Hogan, who is on his way to do some reconnaissance, for a future mission to capture a French fort. The French are chasing Sara, but not for the reasons she tells Hogan, so he decides to help her in return for information about the fort defenses. Inevitably the two become good friends but Sara has a secret..
Hex's Review: Fun action filled western adventure. The film has kind of a spaghetti western feel about it although not quite as violent. Very enjoyable.

"Along Came Jones" (1945)
-Gary Cooper
Plot: IMDB
Riding into Payneville, easy-going cowboy Melody Jones is mistaken by the townsfolk for notorious gunman Monte Jarrad. The real Jarrad is hiding out wounded on the ranch of childhood sweetheart Cherry. She has the idea of sending Jones off to decoy the pursuing posse, but once he's met Cherry, Jones has other plans.
Hex's Review: Great light- hearted western adventure. Plenty of action and humor. A very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.
