Offended by a comment made in regards to the Hamar family !
I don't know about anyone else in the western/rodeo community, but I was very offended by the comment made in the Feb/Mar issue by Kemp Weeks regarding the Hamar family.
I felt as if Kemp Weeks was saying that all parents who have children in the "dangerous sports" (bull riding, soccer, wrestling, motocross, etc. were the examples used) are "pushing" our children for our own "self gratification" and that we as parents are not looking out for the well being of our children. I do understand that there are parents that push their children into doing activities for their own self gratification and I also do not agree with that. However, to put all parents with children in "dangerous sports" into that category is wrong!! I cannot speak for soccer, wrestling, or motocross parents because I am not one, but I can speak for the rodeo and ranch parents. Being a ranch or rodeo kid is a way of life usually passed down from generation to generation. We are very proud of our heritage and proud to PASS IT ONTO our children NOT PUSH IT ON our children. Speaking for myself, my parents, my friends who are parents and any other parents who agree with my side...We love our children more than we thought possible to love anything in the world and would NEVER endanger their lives! When you go to a youth rodeo or step onto a family run ranch you will never experience a closer more loving family environment! Obviously, there are people out there who do not understand our way of life and who think we are selfish and/or unfit parents. In regards to those people who write to a COWBOY magazine bashing COWBOY parents....Maybe you should stick to whatever "safe city sport" that YOU see fit for YOUR children, do not try to involve yourself in a lifestyle that you apparently have no experience or understanding of, and last but not least. If you have such a problem with the way COWBOY parents who read this COWBOY magazine raise our children, maybe you should subscribe to a magazine that better suits your thought process...Better Homes and Gardens or How To Be the Perfect Parent!
"It's a dangerous business, (Human), going out of your door." Life is meant to be lived not spent sitting in the corner shivering in fear you or your family "might" get hurt or killed. Use all the safety devices available and get out there and do what you enjoy while you can.
I just want to tell everyone that has commented, thank u for your support!! Nice to know I'm not alone on this one!

I'll have to agree with Marquiss QH. I had a conversation with a couple of moms a few years ago (I was a single parent at the time) and they were complaining about the troubles they were having with their teenage sons. I was saying nothing. One of them said, "Jack, you have a teenage son. What do you do to keep him under control?" I told them I didn't have any problems with my son. They asked what my secret was. I replied, "If I told you, you wouldn't believe me." They kept on prodding me for my methods, so I told them. "Guns and Motorcycles." They laughed and said it was B.S., and I said, "I told you you wouldn't believe me." I had to explain that both sports (Skeet and Road Racing) came with obligations, and in order to compete, my son had to stay out of trouble, do his chores, and get good grades. As long as he kept his part of the bargain, he could compete and I'd support him. In 1991 he won a national championship in AHRMA Vintage Road Racing. The lessons he learned from both challenging sports will stay with him for the rest of his life. He's a better man for participating in a sport where his physical well being is challenged. He learned about responsibility and risk. The same holds true with Rodeo sports. Youngsters who compete in truly challenging sports develop a stronger character than those who don't. They are much better off in life because of these experiences.

I think it far better to challenge our kids than to let them spend hours staring at an electronic device..
I'm darn glad I was raised when I was..heck, the spice of danger is what made childhood fun...I know I loved trying to ride the cows ( which I was forbidden to do, of course) and taking out "Old Shorty" who was a wonderful retired cow pony who had no patience for kids and would buck us off, try to decapitate us by running under low hanging branches, would try to scrape us off on the side of a barn, etc...he was my favorite horse of all 'cause my daddy would tell us that if we could ride Old Shorty, we had "proven ourselves"...I live in a city now, have for years, but it was my country raising that made me the strong and independent woman I am...when you have faced down a mad bull, you know how not to show fear..and how to move quick! So don't take it too heart too much when "helicopter" parents protest letting kids find out that they can get hurt and get over it.

Wow. Good for you, Marquiss, spot on. My sentiments, exactly. Love it.
Thanks for your comment to my ranting and raving! I have never written a reply to a magazine article, however, I was so offended by that comment I couldn't help myself! LOL!! :)
