Touring the West
Hello folks,
Was wondering if i could use your brains for a trip me and my mother are planning. We live in Scotland and we have always promised ourselves to travel through america in an rv. Over the past week or so we have decided to actually plan the trip and start saving. We want to travel mostly through the western states. We were hoping to do it in this order.
California
Arixona
New Mexico
Texas
Colorado
Wyoming
Montana
Idoho
Oregon
Washington
We were thinking of taking 10 days to do the trip and we aren't very sure if that would be not be enough time? we were also hoping to go see a rodeo as well and was wondering if any of you all had any suggestion. My mother would also like to visit a Native reservation as well. We would also like to try and go to a drive through cinema as well along the way. I understand this is alot to ask but we have been trawlling the net for some of the answers but i thought it would be better to get the information from the people that would know best.
We apprieciate all the advise and suggestions and will keep you all updated on our plans.

Better a long days work than a sleepless night.
First: you have come to the best magazine for information of the Rodeo and Cowboy/Western information. I do enjoy what American Cowboy offers for advice of where, when and what to see in Rodeos and CW events.
May I also suggest that you search the State web sites for those states you wish to visit. In California we have a great State website to the Fairs every year: Just google any of the STATE fairs. I advise this because most of these fairs have concerts, rodeos and a lot of Americana - plus they are really a bargain for what you get. Perhaps the "Daddy of em All" is (( Cheyenne Frontier Days )) that runs from July 23 - august 1, 2010.
Places to see - put the South Dakota area of Mt. Rushmore on your list. There is so much touring to do there that it is impossible to see it in one visit. And of course Yosimite Natonal Park will lead you from California into the Rocky Mountains and the mid-west.
May I suggest you contact Cruise America - RV rental and ask these questions. I bought my RV from them used and they treated me like gold. They were family owned by some Canadians when I dealt with them but not sure if that still applies. Still great service.
Also. there are a huge number of Scottish organizations in the States. They have festivals going on all the time. I do not belong to any but we read about them all the time - try googling - Scottish events in whatever state you want to visit. I do know that they are extremely friendly.
Also - contact the -- Good Sam -- club, which is an orgainzation that supports and promotes RVing here in the States. Also KOA Campgrounds are fantastic and affordable.
This list could go on and on - but you have done the right thing to ask and with the internet today you should be able to plan a fantastic trip. Good luck and when you do get here - Welcome...
There are endless possibilities!
I think everyone should see Yellowstone. It is beautiful. On your way there stop by Jackson Hole Wyoming. It's a little tourist town with a cowboy theme. If you are there you must go to dinner at the Bar J Wranglers. It has a very entertaining show and a good cowboy meal.
Mesa Verde is an intact Native American city by the four corners area (UT, CO, NM, AZ). Also the Grand Canyon is pretty neat.
But don't avoid Utah. I noticed it wasn't on your list. That's where I'm from so of course I love it. If you are in southern Utah go and see Zion national park. If you are in central eastern Utah, visit Moab and Arches National Park. If you pass through Salt Lake City. Visit Temple Square. It's our biggest attraction and worth at least a quick stop. In the northern part of Utah, in the middle of nearly nowhere, you can see promontory point. It's where the railroads crossing the country were joined. It does have significant historical value, but it's a out of the way a bit. Antelope Island, in the Great Salt Lake has a nice buffalo herd to see also.
I know Utah wasn't on your list, but I had to at least mention it.
I've been through some of the other states, but am not really the best person to give advice about those.
Have a fun trip!
