Ok here is my question. HOW can I get a pair of boots that fit my legs and feet with out cutting into my legs. I live in Indiana :( all I find around my area is boots with openings for those fence rail, string bean guys and girls. Well from working construction and working with horses in Fl I have just a little bigger leg calf than that. Well I stand 5'7" and weight 270. Anyway I had a pair given to me ion 2006 for me to get married in. I had sores on my shins and calves for a month where those boots ate at my legs. I am still looking for a good pair of boots Any help would be appreciated.

I am a bigger guy and do not fit into most standard boots. I have mine custom made. While they may not be the cheapest boots in town, they for me to perfection. My bootmaker has become my friend over the last decade. I wouldn't buy boots any place else. That is the one plus of custom boots, he has a mold of my feet and calf and ankle measurements. I can order them over the phone, and 3-4 months later when I am in town I can pick them up.

Nathan - you need to make sure that the lining inside the boots is supple leather. Also the tops should be supple to allow the boots to move with your legs.

I completely agree with you, if you are riding a horse you need a good pair of boots. Well there are different kinds of boots available but it is really hard to find the right pair of boots which is also comfortable for horse riding. Tony Lama are quite comfortable to wear. I have tried Tony Lama in the past and I am impressed.

South Texas Cowboy has got some good advice making your boots feel more comfortable. I've never had the same struggle with the upper but liked the recipe for a good boot conditioner. Although, my problems with cowboy boots have always been solved with some simple justin boot stretcher. I agree, it should start with a good fit first.

Most boots are very comfortable never causes upper leg rub on the shins or calf but when this does occur, it is not pleasant. I had a pair which was made from heavy exotic skin with a soft interior calf hide. Initially, they wore comfortably for about an hour but the upper rub became a nightmare until I figured out what to do.

The first thing which came to mind was wearing a heavy sock, but that made the foot not feel as comfortable while it did reduce the rub. It really did not work for me wearing the heavy sock or doubling up a pair, so I returned to a normal wool sock.

Since it was the top that was uncomfortable, I cut the foot out from one pair of socks and added that when wearing those boots. That worked and allowed me to wear them much longer. However, the uncomfortable feeling would come back after a day of wearing having to revert back to wearing a different pair until the skin of my legs healed from the nasty irritation.

One friend recommended cutting the top making a split in the boot. That likely would work but the leather was the problem. It wore solid and tough. I finally reverted to conditioning the leather and stretching the neck of the welt. This worked and the boots finally became my favorite pair for years, but only after doing some serious tenderizing to the thick leather upper.

Stove Pipe Boots and other Cowboy boots that have a heavy skin such as shark, elephant, or just think cow hide might do this. Take some time to soak the leather upper in a leather conditioner, or spray some Scout Conditioner/stretcher http://www.sheplers.com/mens/shoe_care_accessories/069505.html and place an old bath towel in the neck of your boots to help stretch and soften long enough that the neck becomes workable with your stride without causing further irritation.

There are several ways to make your own leather conditioners without the cost of expensive products. I like using Murphy's Oil mixed with olive oil.

Homemade Conditioner:
2 tablespoon Murphy's Oil
1/3 cup Olive Oil
4-5 drops vinegar
1/3 cup warm tap water

Mix together thoroughly. Then apply the conditioner working into the inside and outside of the complete upper of your boot. After completely coating, then place a rolled bath towel into the upper stuffing it so that it will slightly stretch the leather. Allow to rest for 1 to 2 days and then reapply and repeat allowing for one to two more additional days.

When the leather feels soft and has had time to be stretched, then wipe clean with a dry cloth and apply white Petroleum jelly, (vaseline to the upper working deep into the leather inside and out side. This should soften the leather making if comfortable to wear. Note: You don't have to have a fat calf to feel uncomfortable in a stiff neck pair of stove pipes....it just takes longer to break'em in.
