Western writers
I just got a new Louis L'amour book to read. My parents found my brothers and my names in L'amour books. I've named my two boys after L'amour characters (though my second boy we almost named after Captain Woodrow Call, Lonesome Dove).
That being said... Louis L'amour is my personal favorite of the western authors. I really enjoyed the
Lonesome Dove series by Larry McMurtry, but I still like L'amour better.
I want to read from more western authors, but I read from recommendations.
Any favorites out there?
Its amazing, looking at the time and effort you put into your blog and detailed information you provide. I'll bookmark your blog and visit it weekly for your new posts.

That being said... Louis L'amour is my personal favorite of the western authors. I really enjoyed theQuotes about lairs
Larry McMurty who wrote the Lonesome Dove series is one of my favorites just for that series. Ralph Cotton is another western writer who I really like. His books with Arizona Ranger Sam Burrack are my favorites. Ive also recently picked up some Elmer Kelton books that I really enjoy.
Just started reading William Johnstone (Sidewinders series). These books have been really good, I really enjoy reading them, especially following following characters in a series. The writing is light and the portrayal of the characters is clear and colorfull. Was thinking maybe their should be a book/movie list on the site. I'm going to write down a coupl of the recomended books that I've seen here,
The list is a long one, there are so many good ones out there.
We must remember Will James for authentic "cowboy" stories.
A couple of others:
Elmore Leonard
Robert Parker (just passed)
If you are really interested in the "real cowboy" stories, you must read the non-fiction "Cowboy Life, the letters of George Phillip" and "Cowboss, the story of Ed Lemmon" These are just two. There are many more.
I'd have to say my favorite western author is Jack Schaefer. If you don't know who he is, he's the author of the books "Monte Walsh" and "Shane". The book Monte Walsh is so much better than the movies. The movies are just a loose resemblance of the characters that Jack Schaefer created.
My second favorite author would be Larry McMurtry for the book Lonesome Dove, which is also better than the movie...but at least the movie was close to the book.
Hi all just read the stuff others are writing and had to comment. Now Iv read Louis L'amours books and I most say he was a very good writer I also like Zane Grey. These two names come up most of the time when talken about western writers. Although there are many many more who are just as good if not even better. Two of my favorites are Charles Alden Seltzer and William MacLeod Raine. If you have not read anything by ether of these authors check them out you might be surprised.
I loved reading all the L'amour books I could. Also Zane Gray. As a kid I had an army footlocker full of hats and cap guns and chaps. I outfitted the whole neighborhood and we'd ride around on our broom horses in the backyard. I wanted to be The Lone Ranger and Hopalong Cassidy. I now have about 5o John Wayne movies. I have even written a western novel and it is published. I think the real America was built by men who lived by the values they were taught, even when others tried to take away thier dreams. This is what my book is about. Thanks. B L Strong, author strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TheDreamTheMan
I like nearly anything that was written by Louis L'Amour. There are several authors that I have enjoyed. Chip Carlson, Hampton Sides "Blood and Thunder", Michael Wallis "Billy the Kid", mostly I enjoy reading autobiographical accounts written during the old west. William Breckenridge "Helldorado" was a good one. My friend Joaquin Jackson "One Ranger". There are so many, Bob Boze Bell, the list goes on. Most people can't imagine that I can even read but there's alot that goes on under this ol' Stetson. I don't enjoy too much fiction (we get enough from the pollyteeshuns) so I read history and that's a wild ride.
Tom Horn,
Range Detective
I'd have to go with Cormac McCarthy—strong prose, sensitive heart, knows cowboys.
