In the past year or so, I have been looking at the "Made in" tags on almost all the stuff I buy. It is a though thing to look for stuff that is not "made in china". I like to buy stuff that american make and support their life's and family's. I think that should be the way it should be. So my question to you is how much would pay for something that was made in the U.S. or raised in the U.S.?

Chris LeDoux was a very good friend and a talented performer but I want to introduce y'all to Clay Canfield. Chris cut one of Clay's songs on his last album "Horsepower" called Buffalo Grass. Clay is an Nashville-based acoustic artist and cowboy to the bone...I'd like to offer you a link to his Facebook page.
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Clay-Canfield/113085316846 His 3 CDs are available at www.cdbaby.com/claycanfield
also...Red Steagall, Corb Lund, Baxter Black and Western Underground
While my choices would be Chris Ledoux, Michael Martin Murphy and George Strait, I'm a bit surprised that no one mentioned Arizona cowboy Marty Robbins or Canadian rancher Ian Tyson. Former bull rider Red Steagall deserves a mention as well.
For my money I think it would have to be an artist who has REALLY been a cowboy. The most obvious choices are George Strait and Chris LeDoux but I also have to agree whole-heartedly with the suggestion that of people out there writing songs and performing them about the "cowboy" you can't overlook R.W. Hampton as he spent many years as a working cowboy riding on ranches across the west. The only other name on the list above that could be considered a "real" American Cowboy by that definition would be Wylie Gustafson of Wylie and the Wild West.
So my picks in order of "cowboy-ness" would be:
Chris LeDoux
R.W. Hampton
George Strait
Wylie Gustafson
The rest aren't even in the ballpark regardless of what they sing or sing about.

Sorry I am joining this discusion so late , but I am new to the forum. Lots of good suggestions , and some not so good . By far its Chris Ledoux . George Straight a close second . Also a good representation of modern western music is Brenn Hill. I see a few of you listed him. I love all his music. His new album Equine is great.

I guess I'm showing my age, but I miss two names on the list who are synonymous with Cowboy songs. Those two are Tex Ritter and Frankie Lane. Tex Ritter's 'High Noon' won the Oscar for Best Song in 1953 (I think it was 1953). Tex sang nothing but 'C&W' for his whole career. Frankie Lane was noted for his top selling C&W songs, with a long list of hits including his rendition of High Noon, as well as "Rawhide"......

I would have to say the best Singer is George Strait

I would have to vote for Chris Ledoux. I was able to meet him several times and he was a true cowboy gentleman.
Michael Martin Murphey best respresents the American Cowboy. For about the past 20 years, he has put out CD after CD of cowboy standards and his own cowboy songs, and he has a ranch near Taos. HE has kept the cowboy history in front of us with his music and has a real respect for the cowboy, the west and culture.
I travel around to western music and cowboy poetry gatherings around the west and there are certain folks who are still out there pounding thier boots on the boardwalk...the Sons of the San Joaquin, Dave Stamey, Juni Fisher, Brenn Hill...they are do a great job representing AC.

Chris Ledoux and George Strait both buckle winning cowboy singers and great Guys RIP Chris Ledoux
Happy Birthday to the King!

I was raised on Chris LeDoux and that's who i have to say is the best to represent AC! Chris was country and rodeo thro and thro and there's plenty of people that would agree with me that he is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chris LeDoux thro and thro!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a simple one, if you want the real deal from top to bottom then Chris is the man. I don't know a single person in Johnson County who don't know who he was, or still is to some of us.
You hear him sing about rodeo, he's done that, been the best too. You hear him sing about ranching, he's been there. Family? That too. Hungry, in pain, broke, drunk, happy, sad, all that too, he's done that, been there, knows what it's like to deal.
Ok, now, what's Kid Rock doing there anyway? This is like a cancer, sorry to say, that guy's been all over CMT and stuff for a while, but why? I still can't understand that one.
Hands down it has to be Chris LeDoux (name me one on the list that has won a Buckle), thats the end of it.
Romans 8:28
if you're putting together a mixed tape or cd (or you just wanna put some new music on your ipod) i might suggest;
Asleep At The Wheel - Ride with Bob
Brenn Hill - Endangered
Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez - Red Dog Tracks
ANYTHING by Chris LeDoux
Corb Lund - Losin'Lately Gambler
Cowboy Nation - We Do As We Please
Deryl Dodd - Pearl Snaps
Joni Harms - Let's Put The Western Back In The Country
Luke Olson - Uvalde
Justin McBride (if you don't kow who that is...i just don't know) - Don't Let Go
You could get into ANYTHING by R.W. Hampton (most noteably The Last Cowboy, and Ridin the Dreamland Range) or Wylie and the WildWest.
i like to put 'em on in the summer and sit out back with a Sangria while the coals heat up....
and a note to Jonah Hex:
if you haven't checked out Ghoultown..you owe it to yourself.....

I have to cast a write-in vote for Chris Ledoux. His music may be more country than Western, but the man was an outstanding rodeo cowboy, performer, family man, and ambassador of the Cowboy Way.

I suggested George Strait because he's the real deal. Not only is he the King of Country Music, but he's a cowboy too! He can rope and ride with the best of them.

There are many on that list that would be a great choice to represent THE American Cowboy Magazine....but Kid Rock??? Really now??? Hes not even country! Hank Williams Sr., Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash (and many other great artists) would be great choices.

Kid rock! I don't think he even knows what country really is! I have to agree that Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash Patsty Cline and others along that line would be my vote. George Strait...Maybe.
