Where would you go?
Just curious where you would go if you could take off for a week or two to travel.
I have been to Laramie Wyoming once and loved my very short stay. I would love to go back again in the spring or early summer and visit some sites in WY such as Devils Tower, the snowy range mountains and a few other sites.
Next on the list outside of WY would be Colorado, Nevada, Utah, or New Mexico... just cause I've never been there.
I'll go along with Jackson Hole. Last time I was there, though, was back in the 70's. It's now the second generation or so, but they still probably do similar. It was the Bar T 5 camping trip in covered wagons using the old logging roads in Yellowstone and camping out there. You could also ride along. It was one of the best experiences in my life and will take it with me as long as I have a memory in my head. One of my best times was sitting alone on the side of a hill around sunset facing a pond. When I first got there, all the woods critters got quiet. Then when they got used to me, they came out and the birds also started singing again. That happened about 30 years ago, but I remember it like yesterday.

Horsey, You've been around a bit for a Chicago gal. Before I moved from there in 69, aside from my USAF traveling I didn't go much of anywhere besides N. Ill. and S. Wis. Since then I've been to almost all of the remaining 50 states. I think Utah, Arizona, and California are the most scenic. Of course, Utah and Arizona are beautiful in a very desolate sort of way.
What fascinates me is going back to the early to mid 1800s, and imagining traveling West in a wagon, pulled by mules or oxen. Back then there were no farm ponds or reservoirs. If a creek was dry you were SOL. Then, imagine the Spanish traveling Northeast from Mexico into Kansas, getting to central Kansas, and turning around 'cuz it was so dry they would expire if they kept going ahead. This was 75 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.
America is such an amazing country, and we are lucky to be free Americans.
Kansas Jack
Hello, Jack.
Yes, I have traveled alot. Always was curious as to where another road went to. Jackson and Yellowstone are still my favorite places. On my trip which I talked about above, I learned to drive a 6 horse team. Or, rather, I held the reins while the team which was a lot smarter than me did their job. I learned enough to stay out of their way.
Best times of my life. I learned the outfit is second generation now and is pretty much similar, except to be updated to more modern tastes. Hope people still go. It was a life changing experience for me.
I have to add, if you are on your way to Wyoming, don't forget to pause in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Wonderful country, filled with history.
time about 150 years.

I have been fortunate or maybe it is just my life to have traveled a bit. One year I listed all the fairs and rodeos I would like to visit. At the top was the Calgary Stampede and it deserved the number 1 standing. Not only do you get a great rodeo and Chuckwagon races but the people are the best. I was really impressed at how clean they kept everything in the fairgrounds. And there is a lot of touring in that portion of Canada.
Again, list the fairs in your area, state and bordering states. They usually have a rodeo and the concerts are free. You than tour the areas and still have a fun thing to do. Happy traveling...
If you're going to be in western wyoming you should ABSOLUTELY stop by Jackson Hole. It is a fairly small resort town, but it's growing fast. There are ski resorts and snowmobile hill climbs for winter sports and in the summer there is great whitewater rafting on the snake river. There are tons of guides to take you and you can go the whitewater adventure style or just the smooth scenic river ride.
The town is full of shops and most are western oriented. The town square has an arch on each side made of antlers. It's a popular photo spot.
One of the most entertaining things is the Bar J Wranglers. It's a group of cowboys that put on a music show with a tasty chuck wagon dinner to accompany. They sing old style cowboy music. By the time you'll leave, you'll be full of good food and crying with laughter from their show. WARNING: Get there early if you want to go because it's a hit and everybody that goes to Jackson Hole will be there at some time during their trip.
A bonus is that it's only a few hours from yellowstone so it could be a stop on your way there.

I second the Route 66 idea, i love getting in the trick and just driving, also i would love to go back to Alaska, its the best place to see wildlife and go fishing. Also following a rodeo around for a whole year would be awesome
Our favorite place on earth is Glacier Park in Montana in June before the crowds get there. Also Pendleton, Oregon during Roundup. It is a rodeo like no other.
I would plan a road trip around one of the best rodeos in the country. I would like to go to Cody,WY and stop at the places on the way. I would like to go to the NFR, hate vegas but I would go just for the NFR. I would like to take a trip down Route 66.

I lived in Montana most of my life and it is beautiful there, but you just have to be careful what part of Montana you're talking about. Eastern Montana and Wyoming is extremely flat and windy, while Western Montana is mountainous and is what everybody pictures when they think of Montana. Once you get east of Billings the country is flat and desolate, and once you get around the Dillon area, it is absolutely beautiful, not to mention there's some great ranches around there.
I grew up just over an hour from Glacier Park so that twas the usual place for a mini-vacation for my family. It is beautiful, but gets crowded during the summer. I've also been to Yellowstone, but didn't like it as much as Glacier.
I was out there june 08 (glacier/whitefish) really loved the place, tried looking around for some work but people were saying no way, that was just the beginning of the end for people that worked for a living. Couple of funny things out there, You get fires out there that get so bad you have to stay inside at times becuase of the smoke and one guy warned me to be carefull with the law he told me the sayin out there was " go out on vacation, go home on probation" I guess the Mt. Police are really bad out there. I have to say I never saw a more beautiful place in my life. I drove from glacier to ennis trying to make yellowstone but pooped out at ennis-ok though had good fishing in ennis (madison river). can't wait to go back there, matbe next time to a real working ranch, that would be nice.
