All Eastern living Cowboy and Cowgirls meet here!
rancherboy — Mon, 2011-05-02 08:13HI Ya'll.
I too live in the east, and while most of the heritage and stuff related to the Old West is in the west, there are a few things out east you can enjoy. There is a real Dude Ranch out east in Del Rio, Tennessee. You will think you are out west, but you'll still be here in the east. Get some of your friends and family together, and utilize the Facebook discount of 40% off to come and enjoy what you love. Another thing you can do in northeast Georgia, is visit the Booth Museum http://www.boothmuseum.org which has a Western Wing all about the Old West. That museum is about 3.5 hours from the French Broad Outpost Ranch http://www.frenchbroadriver.com mentioned above. There is a lot of Cowboy N Cowgirls east of the Mississippi, but you have to get out there to meet them!
Where's the Western Spirit?
Quincy — Tue, 2010-08-24 17:53Although I've spent most of my life "east of the Mississippi," I did spend several in N. California. One big difference that I've noticed is that if you go walking down the street in just about any Pennsylvania town wearing a cowboy hat and boots, your're bound to get some strange looks. Whereas if you do the same in California, no one gives it a second thought. Why is this? I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the western spirit is significantly more prevelent in a western state, still it's unfortunate.
A gentleman recently commented on a rodeo that takes place every Sat during the summer in Salem County, NJ. Thanks so much for that info, sir! I greatly appreciate it and I definately plan to check it out. Does anyone else know of any cowboy-related events that take place in or around Pennsylvania? Thanks!

you should try walking down
gypsy vanner — Sat, 2011-04-16 12:39you should try walking down the street in england wearing boots and cowboy hat very strange looks and comments lol
Where's the Western Spirit?
travelerj71 — Thu, 2010-10-07 15:35This is due to for, whatever reason, people have put their hats on a shelf. Well I live in the north and east of the Missippi and I tip my very worn Cowboy hat to you..
More Cowboys & Cowgirls East of Mississippi than you'd realize!
cowboysy — Sat, 2010-07-24 10:56I have lived in New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Wisconsin and will hopefully (within the next 2 years) my Darlin and I will be relocating our horse breeding operation to a small ranch in central Texas; where I will not leave until I die. But I've lived on the East Coast for more years than I care to admit and I've got to tell you that the Cowboy Way is alive and well!
We have a small horse breeding operation in PA now but I lived near Pilesgrove, NJ (that's South Jersey) for many years previous. Pilesgrove, NJ is home to the celebrated Salem County "Cowtown Rodeo" - a professional rodeo celebrating 55 years of continous operation. Cowtown is acclaimed for being a highlight in the professional rodeo circuit where rodeo performances are held every Saturday night at 7:30pm from the Memorial weekend in May thru the last Saturday in September; and it features all seven rodeo events sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
In addition, all those Cowboys and Cowgirls that fill the stands each Saturday listen to the many FM country western radio stations like 92.5 WXTU, CAT Country 96, Big Country 100.5, WDSY 108, WWSM 1510 and Great Country 107.7 (just to name a few) and frequent the Cowboy Bars where line dancing and two-step happen regularly all around Eastern PA and South Jersey. We own horses and trail ride, belong to rod & gun clubs, and some of us have belonged to SASS (or still do) and often get out there with our single action revolvers and let loose...we attend pig and ox roasts, we get together and play cards, we fish, we hunt and eat what we kill, and we attend country fairs and have a good time.
Why? To bring together Cowboys and Cowgirls who don't live out west, in order to keep alive an original all-American culture and way of life...oh yea, we are many (and proud of it) living East of the Mississippi.

Rose Dunn — Sun, 2010-06-13 12:02Still west of the Ol Miss. but give us a couple of weeks. Looking forward to palavering with "eastern" cowboys/cowgirls with the "old west" attitude.
Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Woodroe Call — Sun, 2010-06-13 10:23As I'am now going West and East rather than North and South my ususal direction. I do have something to say and Rose Dunn and I have been members of SASS for some time and have several horses. I have something to say, but before I run off at the mouth I will consult with Rose and comment more later...

East of the Mississippi
Irishcopper — Wed, 2010-05-19 11:09I just found this group. I was born in New England but have been into things cowboy for as long as I can remember. I lived for many years in California and Washington state and have traveled extensively in the mountain states and Big Sky country. I had the privledge of running the Mickelson Trail Marathon in Deadwood Springs, SD a few years ago. What a beautiful area! If it wasn't so cold in the winter I might consider relocating South Dakota. I currently reside in Tennessee and joined the Single Action Shooting Society. Eventully, I hope to get more involved with SASS and get into some competitions. Are any other members into single action pistols?
SASS
Tex Expatriate — Wed, 2010-05-26 11:42I was with SASS for quite a while but dropped it a couple of years ago because I could not find a shooting group near enough to my new home in Indiana. (There were scads of them back home in Texas!) I believe you'll find plenty of shooting friends in Tennessee.
My alias was Cimarron Lee, the name of a character in some novels of mine. I started out with Uberti clones and, despite having a hammer problem with one of them, I've continued to use them. The Ruger Vaquero is a very good and reliable pistol, and doesn't cost as much as a genuine Colt. Also, nowdays you get a variety of clones that are better than the Uberti products.
We have 4-wheeler trails in our private woods and I shoot off the 4-wheeler for fun sometimes. Next year I'll adopt a couple of mustangs and once they're trained I may shoot off them. Have to see about that.
I hope you enjoy SASS.
Easterners love the west too
johnksr1 — Mon, 2010-05-10 22:05This may never be the busiest group here, but it gives us non-westerners a place to go and share our thoughts. I was born and raised in Massachusetts but my heart was always in the west. I guess it is because all we watched while growing up in the 50’s were westerns, so we were sort of brainwashed. Over the years I have spent as much time as possible in Texas and Arizona, and I find the people and the culture of the west to be a pleasant change from that of the northeast. Every October, my wife and I go to Tombstone for Helldorado Days and dress up in 1880s clothing and live it up with all the other nuts. It’s amazing just how many people from all over the world love the old west and the western way of living. Sitting on the Riverwalk in San Antonio eating Mexican food, driving through Monument Valley in Utah or strutting down the wooden sidewalks of Tombstone Arizona is something everyone should experience. we just love it, plus down there folks don’t stare at me with my hat and boots, like they did here in Massachusetts for years, although now that my hair is grey even in Boston folks don’t stare any more, guess the old saying that old folks can wear anything really is true. YEEHAA
i live in northern ohio and
SunshineRider — Mon, 2010-10-11 23:03i live in northern ohio and the only western-way-of-life inhibiting thing i can find is the 0 degree winters with 4 feet of snow. it is funny tho how sometimes when i get done with the horses i gotta run to a store... ill walk thru the super wal-mart in my black cowboy hat, rodeo buckle, worn out jeans and a dirty work shirt, and black boots with spurs clinking. the looks i get are so funny.
but there are alot of farms here. i cant drive 10 minutes in any direction from the center of town without seeing 6 dozon horses... and i love it... keeps me a job... i dont have the land to have my own ranch so i make my living taking care of other peoples ranches... and usually riding there horses... its great. i get paid to do what i love...
Cowboys and cowgirls of the East
luv my appendix — Wed, 2010-04-28 13:37I was born in the "west" (Colorado), but I live in Florida now, and I was surprised at how many ranches and horses are here! There's team penning every Friday night, and we try to go to a local rodeo or barrel race at least once a month. And we can ride year round!
Horses and Longhorns Galore!
Tex Expatriate — Thu, 2010-05-13 10:10When it was necessary for me to leave Texas for Indiana, I was astounded at what I found. (I wrote about this elsewhere today, but it bears repeating.) Where I live southwest of Indianapolis, it seems every third little farm has horses behind it. A little ways southwest of where I live a man raises Longhorns. There are stables and clubs everywhere. When my grandchild visits from Waco-Austin-Seguin (yes she lives in all three places!) we've no trouble finding places for her to ride.
The abundance of Texas and Western flavor here has been a balm to my homesickness, which never quite goes away.
Addendum
Tex Expatriate — Thu, 2010-05-13 10:46I attended a BLM Adopt-A-Mustang-Or-Burro event near Edinburg, Indiana in April. Because of the depression, it was not as successful as they usually are. But I watched a young Amish man adopt two fine mustangs and load them in his new horse trailer (pulled by a non-Amish neighbor). We chatted a while. He lives in Loogootee and starts two year olds, then breeds and sells them.
He was the first Amish man I'd ever seen in a non-traditional Amish straw hat. He wore a traditional western straw, western boots, and traditional Amish shirt, trousers, and suspenders. So even the Amish can "go" western.
Cowboys/Cowgirls east of the miss.
flboots — Fri, 2010-04-02 11:25If it wasnt for use easterners moving west there wouldnt be any westerners. lol
Absolutely right!
Tex Expatriate — Thu, 2010-05-13 10:12If it wasn't for easterners settling the west, those of us native born westerners wouldn't have been born!
Eastern Cowboys and gals
barnzie3 — Mon, 2010-03-08 13:15Seems us eastern people don't have much to say? I'm pretty sure we are no way the quiet ones in the group! Lets get something going here!
