Wall Drug, Wall, SD
Sodbuster — Sun, 2011-07-03 22:13I enjoy this forum for the nostalgia it brings with it. While traveling to Wyoming this past week, I found to my great delight that the essence of the old 5 & Dime is alive and well, flourishing on the South Dakota prairie. Not only do they still carry a fine assortment of toy cap guns and caps, they have everything today's little buckaroo needs to be properly outfitted (hats, scarves, tin star badges). And the candy - the kinds we enjoyed growing up, are in abundant supply. While the place caters to the tourist, Wall Drug is still a fully-functioning drug store, providing pharmaceutical services to the locals. If you want to re--capture the joys of your youth or just share them with your kids or grandkids, a trip to Wall Drug will get the job done. Even if you don't buy anything, the store's celebration of the West and cowboy culture will provide you and your family a memorable experience that will never be forgotten!

Tom Wilmes — Fri, 2011-07-08 10:22Hi Sodbuster, couldn't agree more about Wall Drug. Look for a road trip across the South Dakota prairie (including a stop at the iconic Wall Drug) in the Oct/Nov issue of American Cowboy. We're working on it now and it will be on newsstands and in subscriber's hand about mid-Sept.
Sounds great, Tom!
Sodbuster — Wed, 2011-07-13 12:14I'll be looking forward to reading this story!

badger — Wed, 2011-04-13 17:14I used to go all the time when I was just a wee tyke and I would still go if I could find one. Like ya"all I got my guns and caps along with my "coon skin hat". I used all this stuff on my official Gene Autry bike ( whose name was Champion) to go everywhere.
Those were the days you could ride ALL over town and be safe....and everyone knew you and your parents so if you were doing somthing wrong it got home before you did.

Desert Rat — Sat, 2011-02-19 07:44When my mother in law passed away last spring my wife was cleaning out her van of whitch she spent many nights in while on the road flea marketing for many years. Under the seat was a cap pistol that on 1st glance could easily be mestaken for a .32 snub nosed belly gun. My mother in law I don't believe ever fired a gun in her life but she carried that cap gun for show and it defenatly would have done the job.

Those were the days!
Sodbuster — Wed, 2010-12-01 19:56I can remember going in there for the cheap candy, the candy cigarettes, the cap guns and caps... I remember when I turned 5, my Grandma took me there for my birthday and bought me a Johnny West action doll AND the horse! I can still remember all the pieces that came with it: six gun, holster, rifle, hat, vest, boots, saddle, coffee pot, cup, frying pan... Johnny West was the coolest present ever! Could you imagine the whining from the bleeding hearts if someone gave one of those to a kid today? We had it good back then. Who needed Wal-Mart when you could get what you needed at the Ben Franklin?

JerryD — Mon, 2010-07-19 12:42Well, I certainly prefer the dime-store cowboy to the drug-store cowboy! Unfortunately, my job doesn't let me get out on the horse too often during the week!

dime store cowboy
flboots — Fri, 2010-02-05 18:50I do remember them good old days of the 5 & 10. We use to go get all the stuff to be a cowboy, hat, guns (cap pistols), for about $2.00. Also got 50cents worth of candy that would last about all day. I would say about 45 pieces of candy, one cent to 2 cents each. That was the big saturday deal. We use to stay out all day running the neighborhood. The only time we came home was for lunch or let mom know your having lunch at your friends house. Use to play hid and seek after dark.
YEA ME TOO!!

5 and 10
Amos — Fri, 2010-01-15 09:53There is a real dime store, with all the fix'ns in Branson, Missouri called "Dicks 5 and 10".
It is in old town Branson and I highly recommend it. Be prepared to see things you haven't seen since you were young.

proverbs31 — Fri, 2010-02-05 23:41Yes, Dicks 5 and 10 is the best. We go there every time we're in Branson; it's the hot spot for our family. Be prepared to wonder around in the store at least an hour. Things are packed in tight and a little shuffled, but its part of the charm. The products are good quality too. We have books and toys from there that have survived three boys.

Nathan E — Thu, 2011-02-17 09:52Yes I remember those days way back then.
Mom and Dad used to by my brother and me cap pistols and rifles to go out and play with.
Electronics have spoiled the kids of today. They don't know what they are missing.

John T — Fri, 2010-02-05 20:13ya I remember those cap guns! do you remember the rifle you could cock and shoot? The one where you could stick the tip in the ground and it would shoot dirt! Wow I havn't thought about that in a long time. Ya your right we'd stay out all day running and riding the bikes and we'd go all over the place! I think we were proabably 8/9 yrs old at the time. Can't imagine just sitting on a couch all day playing video games inside. Sometimes I think about those days wondering if you'd enjoy it a little more, becuase that last day would come only you never knew it. I try to to enjoy things more now, never knowing if it's going to be the last time............
