My Horse
EVERYBODY like to brag about their horse.
I like to hear about other folk horses.
I currently have two horses and a small mule and my wife has two mini donk yard ornaments.
Misty Blue Lucky Star is my main girl. She is the horse of my dreams. Young horse just started this year.
big girl for a fat old man- - 16 hands and about 1400 lbs
She is a little lifey for a fat old man with Arthritis and balance problems and I have fell off her twice and hurt myself. curently looking for a younger rider to use her and put some miles on her. she is 3/4 qh and 1/4 percheron and is a PMU rescue I raised from a weanling from alberta Canada. She is beautiful. good natured but lifey and needs more riding than i can do right now.
Her picture is the one on my posts
so I am riding Palladin Perkins who is an older been there done that Standardbred who still has some get up and go but takes care of me pretty well. A friend loaned me Perkins. He is a standardbred but he is a big stout rascal and handles the fat man with little problem.
At my age I mostly just trail ride but my son and I are talking about trying some team penning. We are both old cowboys and know how to work cows but have not done it on horseback in years and both of our horses are green.
Now:
tell us about your main horse and what you do with em.
Meet Doc
I did a blog on Doc, but I haven't introduced him to the group. Meet Doc. He's 4 this year, sorrel with a flaxen mane & tail. Doc's a friendly sort, 15.1 hh, and friendly towards people. He has already informed all the other mules that he's top mule in the South pasture. I'm hoping fur won't fly when he and Willie meet. Willie stays in the North pasture.
What's Hapnin' Now
Check out my latest blog, 'Here We Go Again'... I just made a deal to buy 3 more mules. 2 white mules, a John and a Molly, and a Sorrel Molly with white stockings on all four legs. I'll be picking them up later this week. All 3 are yearling mules, born last summer. I'll be posting some electric photos after I get them home. My wife Jacki wants to call the sorrel molly, Sadie.
Fifty
FIFTY, yes FIFTY Degrees. It's been so long since we've seen 50 degrees (F of course) that I almost forgot what it was like. The snow is melting but it's not all gone yet, leaving a lot of soft ground and mud. The equines are actually eating some of the grass that was left in the few bare spots that cropped up. Most of the fields are still snow covered.

Welcome to the NGs
I want to welcome all the new members to Missouri Mules. The weather is starting to break here in Missouri, and I'm getting anxious to start working with my mules and donks. I'm looking forward to train my senior mule, Willie, to drive this year. I'm going to start training my donk, Jacque B. Nimble, to drive this year also. Jacque will be 4 in April, while Willie will be 6 in June.
Winter Wonderland
This 'Global Warming' is having fun affecting the weather patterns. The fronts have been both hitting and missing the Heartland, and then intensifying and kicking the snot out of the Eastern states. We're expecting another front coming thru Missouri in the next day or two.

Horses
Hall Serno — Mon, 2011-04-11 08:45Some sites get plum upset when you start explaining where your horse came from and who his Ma and Pa was, such is not the case. Like our latest Lighting Bill Cody out of Gold Card Whiz and Finest Legacy (who is called Amber...barn name) and another of the herd Lighting's ma, and we love them all. Is there a way to post pictures on this subject it would be very nice to share those also...Might suggest that to admin as that just might make a great place even better.

Kansas Jack — Fri, 2010-12-17 09:21This is tough, 'cuz my favorite horse is only half horse. The other half is ASS, as in equus assinus. Yep, he's a Mule. His name is D-Day Willie. That's him as my avitar. His name is D-Day Willie 'cuz he was born on June 6, thus remembering D-Day from WWII. He's loaded with personality and a joy to work with. I'm training him to drive this year and I look forward to many enjoyable drives with him.

KY Rough Rider — Wed, 2010-12-08 19:10I have 2 horses COWBOY and MO. COWBOY is my bragging horse He is a 21 YO Quarter Horse, However he has the stamina of a 3 Year old and spirit as well. I have never known a horse so eager to go. Cowboy stands 16.4-Hands and is very intelligent. He is also mischievous at times.
I spend every second I can with him. during feeding I will set along side of him as he eats and afterwards he will stand beside me with his head on my shoulder for as long as I am there.
We do a lot of ridding on back trails and along the River bank of the Ohio River No matter if we are out on patrol or pleasure ridding Cowboy is content. I also think he can read my mind as we ride. Almost all my pleasure ridding is done on him. Cowboy enjoys a fast hard ride now and then as he is always quick to respond to the command and always ready to go. I think He would make a fine Cavalry mount.
My other horse is MO. He is special too. MO is a 29 YO saddlebred stands 14 Hands and he is a very easy going horse and enjoys the slower pace He is great for patrol riding and going on the back trails and He is also very good with kids. He is very sure footed and very active for his age.
I got both horses from a rescue to use for the volunteer mounted patrol that the U.S. Water Patrol has.
I think it was meant to be as they turned out to be so much more then service horses we bonded instantly I can't think of being without either of them
They aren't pets or work horses to me they are a part of my family and have a place in my hart that no one or thing has ever had.
Who ever said that a dog is man's best friend never had a horse.

My horse
horsey55 — Tue, 2010-11-02 04:32My bragging horse is my one and only. He's a 17 hand liver chestnut saddlebred and will be 15 this year. No one has told him that. He was trained western and hunt seat english. He's also one of the best trail horses I've ever ridden. Not spooky except when a deer crosses his path. My horse Preston also goes bareback very nicely which I like the best on cold winter days. He's also very smart (too much, probably) and knows what's going on usually before I do. Dumb horses don't live long.
Our Friesian Stallion
cowboysy — Fri, 2010-10-08 14:18Our bragging horse is a 7-yr old Friesian Stallion named Hannibal. He's intelligent, sweet, easy going and has a grace in movement that will make your heart melt. With a fantastic conformation, he stands at 16.2 H and is available for breeding via live cover or A.I., in case anyone is interested. Hannibal is Internationally registered with the Friesian Horse Society (FHS).
My missus and I bred him and now have the sweetest little 4-month old Friesian part-bred filly named Gabriella. Gabriella is sired by Hannibal and her dam is a Spotted Draft/Gypsy cross. She has her sire's fabulous personality and movement and she is smart, sweet and huge for her age! Her color is changing and dark hair is coming in underneath so we're not sure what colors she will be at this point, but she'll be a flashy girl! Gariella is Internationally registered with the Friesian Horse Society, Part-bred division. She's under purchase contract by a horse farm near Pittsburgh, PA and will be leaving us soon as we get her weaned.
Anyone interested in seeing what a beautiful stallion our Hannibal is should go to http://www.valhallafriesian.com where there are photos, breeding contract, and contact information.
We also have two older Tennessee Walker geldings named Midnight and Gennesis, who are 30 and 24 years old respectfully. We're hoping to relocate to Texas Hill Country within the next year or so where we'll startup a small Friesian breeding ranch and are looking to produce some great looking (and riding) Friesian part-breds; and we'll sell some too.
Happy Trails y'all...

My horses are my kids!!
BikerCowgirl — Wed, 2010-10-06 15:43'HI YALL' I am new to this website and just wanted to let you know a bit about me and my horse family. I got my 1st horse when I was 8 years old and living in California, and have been hooked and in love with horses ever since. Being a country girl at heart, the city life of Cali was not for me and I moved to Idaho in my early 20's. Wow..that was a long time ago..LOL!!
My hubby and I have a 23 acre ranch in Idaho and this time have 11 riding horses..with 3 of them (Lightning, Friday & Dusty) being RESCUES. Paris is an 11 Y.O. APHA Paint mare, Dakota is a 10 Y.O. Silver Dappled Palomino Quarter Horse mare, Lightning is a 27 Y.O. Buckskin Quarter Horse gelding, Shooter is a 12 Y.O. minimal gray Quarter Horse gelding, Diesel is a 20 Y.O. Sorrel Quarter Horse gelding, Dusty is a 16 Y.O. Fleabitten gray QuArab Mare, MC is a 7 Y.O. Dappled Chocalate Rocky Mountain gaited gelding, Cowboy is a 9 Y.O. Bay Rocky Mt. gaited gelding, Chopper is an 8 Y.O. Black Kentucky Mt. gaited gelding, Red Wind is an 8 Y.O. Pinto Tennessee Walker and Friday is a 21 Y.O. Palomino Tennessee Walker.
We use them on our ranch around our cattle (down to 6 breeding cows and 11 calves) and truly enjoy trail riding with them in the mountains..especially if we go for days while camping. I show them in local horse shows at halter, western and trail course classes and we also ride in judged obstacle trail courses that take place in the mountains in our area.
In April of this year..I started a small business of raising miniature horses (mainly Appaloosas) and what a hoot they are. Last year we had bought our 2 oldest granddaughters each a miniature and I fell in love with these little versions of the wonderful horse. They are like having a bunch of puppy dogs around and are so sweet and charming. Right now I have 2 national champion Appaloosa stallions..Sizzler and Rock Star. My mares are BeBe (Palomino), Lea (Buckskin), Etruska (Buckskin Appy), Fashion (blk/wht Pintaloosa), Spanish (Blood Red Bay), and Dreamer (Red Roan Appy). We also have a pinto gelding named Maverick, a pure black yearling filly named Lil Bit (22" tall) and a 5 month old Appy stud colt named Gunner (out of Etruska). I raise them for sale and show all of them in AMHA/AMHR miniature shows and also in local shows against big horses in halter and trail classes and they always place in the the top three. I am in the process of building a web page and will post it as soon as it is finished.
My horses are my kids and give me a reason to get up every morning. They each have their own very unique Horsenalities and without them I would be lost. Our 6 year old granddaughter (the only one out of 4 grandkids that rides) is our little Cowgirl and will start Barrel Racing/Pole Bending in shows next year. I am hoping to start team penning with friends at the shows next year also. I have never done this..so it will be a new adventure for me...Yee Haw!!!!!
My hubby and I also enjoy riding our Steel Horses. We have a 2001 Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail and a 2005 custom show Chopper. We enjoy the sun on our faces and the wind in our hair whether it be on the backs of horses or the backs of bikes.
My motto is that life is a wonderful journey and it's not the breaths you take..but the moments that take your breath away..and my horses have allowed me to have so many of those specials moments and memories!!
Rescue A Horse..Save A Spirit
It is not the destination that is important..it is the wonderful journey along the way!!

Traveling by horseback
Flora — Tue, 2010-07-06 12:00I absolutely love traveling on my horse. It is so relaxing to take in the scenery and really enjoy the travel step by step. I was wondering if it was a good idea to have some sort of travel insurance when traveling by horseback?
The Kids
Rose Dunn — Sun, 2010-06-13 12:14Sure do like the idea of being in a group where the members love and respect their equine friends-not just using an animal.
All our 4 legged friends are part of the family. I second Woodroes sentiment...would be nice to be able to share pics of the kids...lol

horse1414 — Fri, 2010-05-28 16:52Boy Oh Boy, do I wish I had a horse. Always wanted one.
My Horse
mulelady04 — Fri, 2010-05-28 08:48I ride a big black mule named Loverboy. He is 15.3 H, not a mean bone in his body. He does scare people when he backs up to them, but he just wants you to scratch his ass. He was born on my farm and is spoiled a little I guess. I haven't been riding him alot until recently although he is 9 yrs old. I broke him myself and he is doing great. Team penning is fun even if your horses don't know much about cows. I would also like to try the Extreme Cowboy race. Not the one on TV but local shows around my area. I think my mule would do good just don't know how fast he would go. Lots of luck to you and happy trails1
Mules
Kansas Jack — Fri, 2010-12-17 09:36Hey Mulelady,
I'm a mule person too. Got my first mule, Willie, about 1 1/2 years ago. He's a blue roan and loaded with personality. I bred two of my mares last year and got a handsome buckskin John mule over Memorial Day weekend, and a handsome black John Mule on Aug. 13. I often tell people that if I had started with donks and/or mules I would never have gotten into horses. Right now I have 6 horses (2 miniature), 6 donkeys, (2 miniature), and my 3 mules......... Where do you live? I'm from West Central Missouri...

Last Chance
rockinequine — Thu, 2010-05-20 23:22My horse Chance is a 5 year old buckskin AQHA gelding. He still has a lot to learn, but he seems to trust me. This spring we have gone on some trail rides including the Pahaska Trail. I had a great time with him at the mounted patrol desensitization clinic by Allen John.
He is not a pocket pony but I adore him.

Best horse I ever had
poorlittleheifer — Tue, 2010-03-02 14:02My 21 year Tennessee Walker mare Gen's Lovely Lady was pound for pound the best dollars I ever spent. As reliable as they come and nothing shakes her. She was not originally used around longhorn cattle or ropin arenas, but I can move cattle with her, or ride her around our electric Buford and she's a gem. You can get on her cold backed and she rides like you've ridden her all day. You can turn her loose in the yard like a dog and lead her with just a hand on her neck. The kids love her. Smooth gait and gorgeous chestnut with a flax mane and tail. You just know sometimes that they're meant to be your horse. Bought her on the internet. Never saw her in person, never rode her, nothin. Just had her shipped from Illinois. Great people I bought her from and grateful to them. Wish everyone could have one like this for their kids.

My best horses
horseyhousewife — Sat, 2010-01-30 05:34My girl Impressa is a strong big boned Arabian. I too am getting a bit fat and old these days and I find myself being a bit more careful in the saddle. We trail ride mostly but sometimes we do a little team penning or competitive trail. I bought Impressa as a three year old and she sure has come a long way. Most trust worthy level headed horse I own. Had her about 8yrs now
She has had one foal for me a nice lookin mule I named Elly May. Elly will be three this spring and I plan to start putting some miles on her. I broke her to ride last spring and she took to it like an old pro. I'm not a horse trainer by any means so I mostly just took her with me and her ma everywhere we went. She learned by watchin her ma and me. Elly loves to go for rides in the trailer and see new things. I started putting the saddle on her and then one day I just got on and started riding. She never bucked but she would lay down after a while when she got tired or just sick of it, so I would get off and quit for the day. Pretty soon she was letting me ride longer and longer before she would lay down. Some may think thats no way to train a mule but it works good for me and Elly.
We also have a mini donkey a draft mule and a large gaited pony that is the love of my 8yr old daughters life. Ribbon is his name, Ribbon doesen't much care for adults, so I leave him alone and he and my daughter do just fine.
Elly
smiles4miles — Sun, 2010-03-28 18:03Elly sounds just adorable and if that's her in your pic, she looks adorable too.
I don't have a horse yet but I plan to (then again I live in California, land of the "furlough"...I wonder if I'll ever be able to own one).

I have a mule as well. Jim Junior my wife named him so we call him Junior.
thinking about trying to figure a way to acquire some harness as Junior is to small for me to ride. he and my big mare would make an odd looking team but I am tempted to try if I can find harness without going broke.

My Horse Lea
annieoakley — Sun, 2010-01-24 18:44My horse is a 12 y/o quarter horse mare. I trail ride with her or my sister-in-law and I ride the dirt roads around the area where I live. She's gentle, although has become barn sour since I dont get to ride as often as I'd like. She was trouble to get to leave the barn area. I've been working on that and it's better now.
Barn Sour
mulelady04 — Fri, 2010-05-28 08:40I have had Horses/Mules that are barn sour and if they are in a hurry to get back to the barn I just go right past my drive, ride a ways turn around and go past my drive again until they are not in such a hurry. Then I get off and walk, not ride to the barn and tie them up (I take the bridle off) and let them stand there for an hour while I do stuff around the barn, (this also teaches them patience). Then I give them a bath or what ever and a treat and put them up. When first going out I also lead them away from the barn before mounting.
My ride and love is a 15.3 H Mule out of a TB mare that was born on my farm. He was 2 wks late and after checking every few hours for a month I forgot to reset my alarm after a midnight check. When I got up at 6am there he was. He walked right up to me as if to say here I am. (never had a TB or QH foal do that) Any way I named him Loverboy After Midnight, LB for short. He is still learning at age 9 but he loves to go out and see whats going on. Hope my tips help you!
Barn Sour Help
annieoakley — Fri, 2010-05-28 18:28Thanks for you tips. I will give them a try. It's funny how animals know when they are getting close to home. She will be walking so slow and just plodding along and when you turn for home it's like you are off to the races....
barn sour
pdfangus — Tue, 2010-02-02 08:34miles and hours in the saddle will take care of that problem.
hopefully spring is not too far away and some of the mud we have will dry up and we can get back out.
It is so wet in my country that I can not even get my truck near my trailer.
Lots of the local riding areas are closed due to poor conditions. they don't want folks tearing up the trails.

annieoakley — Tue, 2010-02-02 17:59We have had lots of rain here too and mud is everywhere. More rain for later this week. It has been too cold to ride.. I am so ready for spring. One thing that has me concerned with Lea is that when she does not want to do something, she has started rearing with me. I have read the pros and cons of having a tie down. Any suggestions on how to break her of the rearing haibit?
