Romance
makes for memories, and
memories have not just a particular time but a particular
place. The idea of Western romance is especially
evocative of idyllic scenes, magical moods, and sentiment-stirring
scenery. To find some of the best, we tapped some
trusted regular hands to share their views of the
most romantic spots they’ve ever ambled across.
Whether you’re headed there this Valentine’s
Day or anytime this year or beyond, we wish you happy
romancing.
ANOTHER
CLAIM FOR CHUGWATER
I love the mountains, waterfalls, and remote alpine lakes and ponds in Wyoming’s
national forests. But romance in “The Cowboy State,” to me, sweeps
across the soul once you hit Chugwater and its jutting, rocky bluffs alongside
Interstate 25. The clouds seem big enough to reach out and fluff to let the
azure through—just for you. There also could be a stiff breeze but that’s
for the weather service to worry about. Take the exit and head west 14 miles
to Diamond Guest Ranch. It’s open plains, cattle guards, and little else
of interest until you jump the rise right before heading down to the ranch.
There are cottonwoods, green splendor, corrals, and horses. Stay in a barn
stall for $25 a night (May through September—weather permitting). There’s
a bed, and they even have carpeting. Not much else. I can’t remember
ever feeling her heart beat closer. Of course, we were much younger.
