mwest1117 — Tue, 2011-01-25 10:53Well I am from Texas and i love the music coming from there now nashville has lost touch. Like the song says "It dont matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is still the king"
Since this thread is still
nighthawksh — Mon, 2010-11-22 10:57Since this thread is still active, I thought I'd post this poem I wrote on this subject:
WESTERN MUSIC
Who took the “W” out of Country and Western?
Who pushed that music aside?
Who hired these “New Country” singers?
Talented, but probably can’t ride
A cowboy singer is one who’s been there
Knows about riding the range
Keeps his horse nearby and his saddle clean
And work, he does not find strange
Now I’m not knocking the country singers
Wouldn’t say any bad words like that
But you ain’t necessarily a cowboy
Just cause you got boots and a hat
Some spent the riches they’ve made
Buying a cowboy ranch for a fling
But buying something and being something
Can be a totally different thing
Now days I miss Gene Autry
Roy and The Sons of the Pioneers
Tex Ritter singing “Rye Whiskey”
Why, I haven’t heard that one in years
We do have some talent out there
There’s some with a pretty big name
But you’ll never hear them on the radio
For that, who else can we blame?
Like many, we set back in silence
Let others decide what to show
But I want the chance to listen
To a tune about a wrangler named Joe
Or “The Strawberry Roan” or “Laredo”
Or “When the work’s all done this fall”
And I still always get sorta’ misty eyed
When I hear “The Master’s Call”
Now I don’t mean to impose
To push my taste in music on others
But I’d prefer to listen to cowboy music
That is, if’n I had my ‘drothers

Sanders — Mon, 2010-11-22 07:12I like old country music. I often download it at shared files. I think modern country songs are too different, that is why I prefer the old ones, but I'm never tired of it. I always discover some new singer.
country or western?
ocullane — Thu, 2010-08-12 16:29To me, and its just my opinion, country music has gone pop. I like Texas music, early 70's progressive country. I don't work in a factory, I don't cheat on my wife, I don't kick my dog and if my truck is broken down, I fix it. I miss the days of Rusty Wier, Michael Martin Murphy ( though he is still going) Augie Myers, Jerry Jeff. I am encouraged by Gary P Nunn, and new Texas/southwest musicians.
Of course a country music !!!!!!!!!!
sleepy — Thu, 2010-07-22 08:07Us country girls don't have nails to break...don't care what we look like...and love them country boys! cant ask for much more than a country with a ford truck. gotta love us some country boys...best things out there... ;)

Country of course
johnksr1 — Mon, 2010-05-10 21:07When I was growing up I listened to what was called Country Western music. I loved it, then somewhere along the line, the Western was dropped off and the music slowly changed. I still listen to and enjoy today’s Country music, but it sure isn’t what it used to be. I have no idea what makes a song a “Country” song today, but I prefer today’s country music over the other genres available today. I also know that, if country music, as we know it today is to survive, they have to attract the younger crowd, and the young pretty girls and crushed hats seems to be working. I guess today’s “Coyboy” music is the closest to what we used to call country western music, but there are few radio stations playing it. I don’t know of any stations around the northeast playing it.
I don't think most folks
nighthawksh — Sat, 2010-05-01 15:10I don't think most folks today even know a lot about "western" music. They have mixed today's "country" with what is believed to be "cowboy." Let me tell you all, it takes a hell of a lot more than a crushed-up straw hat to be a cowboy.
Oh yeah, I just need an
Flunky — Wed, 2010-05-05 12:14Oh yeah, I just need an excuse here to run my mouth for a while about this thing.
I don't like new country music, it's a joke for the most part. Some good stuff and sure as hell things could be worse, but we'll get there soon enough if we don't stop giving recording contracts to barbie dolls and pretty boys who wear the hat simply because they couldn't make it in the rock or pop business.
Chris Ledoux is the best example. People talk about under appreciated talents but Chris was the best example I know of. A real cowboy, singing honest to God, simple songs about things he knew first hand. Oh and under appreciated for the best part of 30 years. Nice huh? And to think he got his contract because of Garth Brooks, it should have been the other way around, but this ain't no fair world.
Singing dolls showing skin? That ain't what does it for me. I used to like Terri Clark, she was ok, and didn't wear no stupid looking hat. But today all they do is pop up there like weeds, all looking the same and singing about how much they like sweet wine and pickups and stuff. Reba, I loved her music. Saw her live once and I was impressed by how quickly she can change clothes and how often she did so during the show!
I could write a book about those little straws Toby Keith wears, but I won't, gonna let restrain get the best of me here.

nevada4x4 — Mon, 2010-04-05 04:02yup, im a country boy. I dig all the outlaw country. The true, real and old country. I'd say Hank III is my favorite though. That guy has it all. I cant imagine so much what western music really is.

Country or Western
cowboycop3447 — Sun, 2010-03-28 21:24I voted for country, but I like the older stuff. The song by George Strait called Murder On Music Row describes perfectly what has happened to country music today. Although they are very talented, I don't consider folks like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood as country. Give me some George Strait or Merle Haggard any day.
Blue Grass
Desert Rat — Wed, 2010-02-24 17:26I guess Blue Grass from the old days is my Favorite. LOL I've watched Brother Where Art Though about 5 times. Willy is my favorite solo type but I have a good collecection of Web Pierce, Elton Brit, Bobby Helms and many more of the old preformers.

barnzie3 — Thu, 2010-02-25 14:39I was at a couple of fairs last summer where they featured blue grass music. Don't really remember who was playing and I'm sure all the bands were local, but everyone was having a good time. I think it was the perfect music for everyone that was there.

Country!
barnzie3 — Tue, 2010-02-23 13:47I like country, but grew up with my grandparents country. Coca Cola Cowboy, Waltz Across Texas, and many more. Before that I was dippin' into a little southern rock which is always hot!
Voted Country ...
JimmieRodgersSociety — Wed, 2010-02-17 17:20... but it's not all that simple to eliminate western.
As might be expected, I'm a big fan of old-time country which certainly advocated its share of western-themed music, such as Jimmie Rodgers' "When The Cactus Is In Bloom" ... it really does have it all.

The Emerald Gypsy — Wed, 2010-02-17 13:39I voted country, but I guess that's kind of because I'm not really sure what an example of "western" music is .. !?!??? I would have to agree about modern country crossing over into pop, which is why I am choosy with my music selection .. I like the older sounding stuff and a lot of the independent labels ... I can REALLY appreciate the "red dirt music"!!! :)

Country vs. Western
McLintock — Thu, 2010-02-11 21:34The reason I say country is, not because of the "country" you hear today, But the country of years past. Hank Williams Sr. is a guy who comes to mind, how can you get more country than "I'am So Lonesome I Could Cry"
Romans 8:28
Exactly! Cant beat Hank Sr.
La_cowgirl21 — Thu, 2010-02-11 21:38Exactly! Cant beat Hank Sr. Once told a guy that I was more into Hank Sr's music than Jr's...needless to say he was not happy. lol

The older it is the better
Cowgirl at heart — Fri, 2010-03-19 14:39I have to agree the older it is the better. I would rather listen to the Country music my dad did versus some of the music that is out there today.
I did not like to see the two
nighthawksh — Thu, 2010-02-11 09:16I did not like to see the two seperate. I remember when it was C & W, not just one or the other.
I love true country music, but there is too much "crossover" now days. Back when singers like Johnny Cash hit the music field, they were popular in both pop and country, but did not try to be both, as many today do. They just sang C & W and attracted fans from both generes. I hear a lot of so-called country today that is obviously directed toward the pop audience. If a singer is country, they should be faithful to the music. If other like their music, they will find it.
Now, for me, it is older country and western.
THATS WHAT I SAY!!!
TALL IN THE SADDLE — Fri, 2010-03-19 09:21Thanks Nighthawksh. I read all the comments on the issue to see if someone was going to point out that fact. Country and Western is one in the same you cant have one without the other they go hand in hand. Counrty music would not be where it is today if it was'nt for Western music. Why do you see all the Cowboy hats. That came from the Country and Western era. In fact I would also classify Bluegrass into this category. After all its all considered Old Time music or some use the teram Mountain music. I just like it all. When you get right down to it all came from the same place. For thoses of you who dont know Im talking about there is an album that Dan Fogelberg put out back in 1985 called High Country Snows. It iwas his contribute to as he called it American music. Theres alot of good singers and some of the best players around includeing Doc Watsion,Ricky Scaggs to name a few. I said all this just to say that I belive Country and Western are so close to the same that it should'nt be necessary to separate the two. Its like making a P and J sandwich and leaveing out one of the two.
