instant replay
clampercowboy — Thu, 2011-06-30 17:07Why mess with the Rodeo with instant replay. Football has it and look at all the unnecessary cry baby poor me calls. Rodeo is a pure sport and I think if you add instant replay you will take the history out of it. The folks that competition in Professional Rodeo or P.B.R. a special breed of people. Instance reply will ruin the sport.
Rodeo Instant Replay
South Texas Cowboy — Fri, 2010-10-01 10:51While I am not personally for instant replay, I understand how it can be effective in the sport of Rodeo. Rarely does a judge make a bad call. However, when this does occur, it sincerely can change the ranking or prize earning of those competing cowboys and cowgirls.
Hannah Kindig of "Rodeo Attitude Reporter" posted October 17, 2006 a story on just this. Her story read "This past weekend in Columbus, Ohio at the Rocky Boots Invitational the PBR introduced a new instant replay feature. Over the past year the judges have made several questionable calls that created controversy amongst riders and fans. This new feature will allow questionable calls to be reviewed in the future.
”The real purpose behind the instant replay is that things are made right,” said Cody Custer, judging supervisor for the PBR. “Anytime there’s an instant replay used in any other major sports it’s basically to make the call be a call that is the right call. I don’t think in any way it tries to question the knowledge or the integrity of the judges.
The instant replay feature will only be used if a rider or judge requests it. The PBR has placed two buttons at each of the exit gates.
If a rider would like his ride to be reviewed, he has 30 seconds from the time the call is made to press one of the buttons and submit his ride for review by the instant replay judge.
After the buzzer is sounded the rider will have a chance to explain his challenge to the instant replay judge before the ride is reviewed.
After the ride is reviewed the judge will give his ruling. If the original call was not overturned the rider’s score (if he received one) will be taken away and he will be fined $500.
” You don’t want a call being pushed 20 times a night. If there’s no repercussion for just pushing the button I think it would get out of hand,” said Custer.
Judges and affected riders are not the only ones who can submit a ride for review. Any other rider who is competing at that event will be able to submit a ride for review even if he is not directly affected by the outcome. However, if he is wrong he too will have to pay a $500 fine.
"On the Rodeo Road" blog this comment came up back in 2009 Personally when I was watching round 10 of the WNFR and Luke Branquinho threw his steer and it rolled right out of his hands and the judges called it “NO TIME”, my heart just sank. Then immediately you think, “play the replay, play the replay”. Well they can play the replay all day long, but if it doesn’t count for the cowboy or cowgirl what is the point? So that is the big question right now…where is instant replay in rodeo?
So I think it will likely become something across the nation to implement. Although, I'm not much for it though judges will sometimes make that bad call whether it was spurring out of the shoot on a bronc or having control at the time a steer was wrestled down. Frankly, I don't see the hurt of having instant replay, just the additional cost that small town rodeos will likely not be able to offer.

Tex Expatriate — Fri, 2012-03-23 12:34You pay your money and you take your chance---on the tack, the animal, yourself, and the judge(s). There will always be sissies who want a review!
