Anyone who loves Quarter Horses needs to read this New York Time article: “Mangled Horses, Maimed Jockeys: The new economics of horse racing are making an always-dangerous game even more so, as lax oversight puts animal and rider at risk” (link below). It’s horrifying and fascinating. The breakdown rates (deaths and injuries) of race horses is appalling; the welfare of these animals is clearly a low priority, not to mention the jockeys that risk there lives to ride them for our viewing and betting pleasure. A complete ban on all performance-enhancing drugs in race horses seems like a bare minimum.
