The idea: In 1977, former roper and California rancher Bob Feist offered up a one-day roping extravaganza. On the hunch that team roping had potential as a spectator sport, he scrounged together $40,000 for prize money and invited 40 teams to compete.

The proof: He was right. Today, the Bob Feist Invitational, held annually on a Monday during June’s Reno Rodeo, hosts an elite 100 teams, competing with one partner through six rounds for a $500,000 purse, making it the richest, one-day, open roping in the world.
